Race in Lacer and Reynolds’ win was that they were wearing official City of Florence T- shirts bearing the city’s motto, “City in Motion.” It gave them a “slight edge in momentum,” he said. The stakes of the competi- tion were simple: whichever city team lost, the mayor would volunteer three hours for the other city. “We have a wonderful idea for this,” said Henry. Saturday, July 18, is Power of Florence Day, a city-wide day of volunteering. Henry said, “I personally want to be very involved in this effort and I can think of no better community service than to invite Mayor Becky to join me.” Ruede said, “In all, it was great fun and plans are under- way to expand the challenge to include other cities next year.” Next year’s Oregon Dunes Triathlon and Duathlon will again feature running, biking and swimming through the beautiful scenery of the Oregon dunes — and possibly, more teams sponsored by local cities. ing applauded. Boyd said, “Thank you, thank you very much, council and Mayor Henry. ... Our com- munity is really grateful. What you’ve done is be heroic. We have a voice now that’s stronger.” “We have gotten commit- ment from Arnie Roblan that he will support our letter and champion the cause,” Henry said. Part of the cause is to add better buffers between pesti- cides and water sources, schools and human habitation. “I’m convinced we have to do something,” Roblan said. In conversations that Roblan has had with the own- ers, he said, “The owner is being responsible. He’s made a lot of concessions by hand- spraying one side of the prop- erty. He’s probably replanting better than the law requires. I’ve been happy to hear those kinds of reports.” He wants concerned resi- dents to know, “They are being heard by lots of different people. ... Everybody wants things to be safe.” Florence City Council plans to finish their revisions and sign the letter soon. from 1A Dunes City Councilors fin- ished at 1:39:24. “Mayor Henry’s Florence team is the winner,” said Ruede. “It is noteworthy that it is less than four minutes dif- ference.” “Team Florence edged out the Dunes City team by a nose,” Henry said. It was a “hard fought battle with both teams demonstrat- ing superhuman capabilities,” he added.
