SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29, 2015 Community sets prayer services for Nepal quake victims On Sunday, May 3, at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m, St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Florence will hold a community prayer service for the victims of the earthquake that struck Nepal, India and China. The service, weather allowing, will begin in the Labyrinth Garden behind the church at 2136 19th St., one block east of Spruce Street. The church recommends donations to: Habitat for Humanity (the international program has a large presence in Nepal, and is already active in relief efforts there); Epi- scopal Relief and Develop- ment, an international aid pro- gram with an outstanding re- cord of efficient international disaster relief; or the Inter- national Red Cross. The donations will be sym- bolically walked to the center of the labyrinth, and then will be gathered into three large envelopes and mailed immedi- ately to the three organizations after the contributions have been prayed over by the assembled community. For more information on this community effort, call the church, at 541-997-6600 on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday morning, or Bob and the Rev. Georgia DuBose at 541-590-3371. Library Tidings by Kevin Mittge Ready Player One by Ernest Cline Book review by Susie Voth I loved this book. It is a fun- filled, exciting blast to the past — specifically, the 1980s. In 2044, Wade Watts is a teen growing up in “the stacks” — recreational vehicles stacked one on top of another using modular scaffolding to hold them upright. The stacks came into exis- tence after an economic collapse caused a flood of refugees from the country to relocate into cities. Life is hard, food is scarce and jobs are hard to come by. Wade lives in abject poverty. However his avatar, Parzival, lives in relative luxury inside OASIS (Ontologically Anthro- pocentric Sensory Immersive Simulation). Inside OASIS is where Wade/Parzival thrives. OASIS is an online simulation available free to anyone with a computer, haptic gloves, and an OASIS visor. This virtual para- dise was created by James Halliday, a multi-billionaire whose final will and testament invited everyone to discover an egg hidden within OASIS and the one who found the egg would inherit his vast fortune. I N BRIEF Kindergarten registration for Spruce Point Assisted Living presents: Because Halliday was fasci- nated by the 1980s, the time period in which he was a teenag- er, the clues to finding the egg are concealed within ’80s movies, computer games, music and television shows. “Ready Player One” is over- flowing with ’80s references. It is a walk — no, wild ride — down memory lane. Parzival’s best friend Aech (pronounced H) is one of the main contenders in the race to discover the egg, as are Art3mis (no, it is not mis- spelled), Daito and Shoto. Of course there are the bad guys, Innovative Online Indus- tries (IOI), led by Nolan Sorrento. “Ready Player One” has been optioned for a movie and so far the only decision made is that it will be directed by Steven Spielberg. I am anxiously await- ing the opening weekend. 5 A 1408476 6WDWH)DUP+RPH2ǦFH%ORRPLQJWRQ,/ old on or before Sept. 1, 2015. Parents should bring proof of age and an immunization record.
