10 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, APRIL 25, 2015 Historian to speak on Lincoln’s ties to Oregon The Siuslaw Public Library wraps up its April focus on the Civil War’s impact on Oregon with the appearance of histori- an and author Richard Etulain on Tuesday, April 28, at 1 p.m., in the Bromley Room at the main branch in Florence. Etulain will discuss his book, “Lincoln and Oregon Country Politics in the Civil War Era,” in which the author reveals lit- tle-known facts about Lincoln’s connection with Oregon. This event is the last in the library-sponsored April series about the Civil War, which ended 150 years ago this month. Etulain has focused on the history of the West for most of his career. He taught history, English, and American Studies at a number of universities for more than 40 years and has written dozens of history books and hundreds of essays. His most recent work is about a lit- tle studied part of history: Abraham Lincoln’s ties to the Oregon Country. Most people do not know that Lincoln was once offered the governorship of the Oregon Territory. Although he refused the position, Lincoln main- tained an interest in the far cor- ner of the nation. As Etulain explains in a 2012 essay, “It was in the political arena … where Lincoln had the most impact on the Pacific Northwest. In all, he may have appointed more than 50 persons to positions in the Oregon Country during his presiden- cy.” Etulain’s writings have received numerous awards, including the Caughey and Western Heritage awards. He has also been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Fellow historian, Glenda Riley, said “The magic of Dick Etulain’s books are that they combine solid history with fas- cinating reading. Want to know about the American West? Etulain will make it live for you.” The author, historian and editor currently lives in Clackamas, Ore., with his wife, Joyce, who is a retired chil- dren’s librarian. Etulain is now co-editor of the Concise Lincoln Library.
