6 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, MARCH 18, 2015 Join members of FRAA for a 30-Day Challenge Roberts photo exhibit continues at Silver Lining The Gallery Above The Silver Lining Boutique is exhibiting the photography of Cliff Roberts during March. This particular grouping is called “China 1985 B.C. (Before Cars)” and is filled with colorful and cultural pho- tos that will viewers under- stand the natural beauties of the Chinese landscape and its peo- ple. Roberts went to China for approximately one month, but captured the essence of a full life in the day of this exciting culture. There are rice patties, temples, exceptional artwork, respect to the ancient antiquity, faces of laborers, children and mothers. In this show he has captured the diversity and respect of a culture that is for- eign to most — it is an exposi- tion of an ancient people caught in a modern world. Roberts is an experienced a photographer able to capture all the emotion for viewers. When he was visiting, it was BC (before cars), except for Today, March 18, from 4 to 5 p.m., everyone is invited to a free event at the Florence Regional Arts Alliance (FRAA) Art Center. Each month, a “speakeasy” is held, with lively topics and conver- sation. March’s speakeasy topic will be “Take the 30-Day Challenge.” Special guest Mark Cutts will explain this in a short talk, and then challenge every- one to try something new for 30 days. Following the talk there will be open discussion, and those who are interested can decide on their own 30 day challenge. FRAA’s Art Center is locat- ed at 4969 Munsel Lake Plaza No. 4 on Highway 101, just north of Fred Meyer. Admission to the March speakeasy is free, no prior reservations are needed, and refreshments will be served. The Great Wall of China captured in a photograph by Cliff Roberts. Shanghi and Bejing, where there were four-lane boule- vards for the future of trucks, buses and small cars made in Japan. China boasted of nine Rolls Royces, all owned by hard working farmers — marking the advent of state-permitted capitalism. Roberts spent a consider- able amount of time in Hong Kong and captured many por- traits and city people, even though many were camera shy. Photos of younger, upwardly mobile young adults are plenti- ful, and many of them attempt- ed to practice their English with him. These pictures truly offer a glimpse into an amazing people and their culture. Some of these artistic photos capture people reading the daily news written on walls, students using an abacus and even the hotel clerk uses one, thick coal dust throughout the cities that obstructed even the morning sun.’ View these remarkable pho- tographs throughout the month of March.
