2 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, JANUARY 24, 2015 65th ANNIVERSARY Dolores Faye (Phillips) Wilson and Edward (Tod) Wayne Wilson, of Noti and formerly of Florence, will cele- brate 65 years of marriage today, Jan. 24, 2015. Dolores was born in the fam- ily farmhouse and raised up the north fork of the Siuslaw River. Her parents were Ernest and Faye Phillips, both early set- tlers of the area and descen- dants of Oregon pioneers. Dolores’ family included two sisters, Beatrice Baughman and Joyce Largey of Hudson, Mass. Edward (Tod) was born in Fruitland, Idaho. His father, Leslie Wilson, moved to the Florence area with his family, which grew to include wife Dorothy, and their children: Tod, Cleve, Majorie, Jerry, Larry and David. Their family owned the Florence Dairy and Tod had the weekly milk run to the Phillips’ homestead up the Siuslaw River. It became apparent Dolores had an interest in him when milk delivery days became the day she made sure to wear shoes. Both Tod and Dolores are graduates of Siuslaw High, class of 1948. Tod began work at the ply- wood mill in Gardiner, Ore., where he served on the union AFLCIO local as vice presi- dent. Tod then moved to the International Paper Mill and worked up to journeyman elec- trician, retiring from the mill in 1996. As Coos Bay opened the Southwest Oregon Community College in 1961, she began her education again there and fin- ished as a proud graduate of the University of Oregon’s teach- ing program in Eugene. For more than 20 years, she was a substitute teacher in the Siuslaw School District. In 2007, she and Tod retired to a small farm near Noti. Travels during their retire- ment years have included trips to Alaska, Panama, Costa Rica, Italy, Greece, Hawaii, New Zealand and Australia. Always ready for another adventure, service work has been an important part of their retirement. Service projects uti- lized the electrician skills of Tod and the hardworking skills of Dolores in such diverse places as the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor and several sites of the historical mining districts in Nevada and Montana. The Wilsons have four chil- dren: Allyn Wilson, Shelley Wilson Hickman, Scott Wilson, Dawn Wilson Sears; and nine grandchildren: Derek Wilson, Adam Wilson, Jasper Wilson- Hickman, Marielle Hickman- Hinderman, Corey Hickman, Grant Wilson, Jesse Wilson, Shelby Wilson and McKenzie Mumpower-Perry. Dolores and Tod will cele- brate their anniversary today during an open house reception to be held at their home, 20429 Highway 126 in Noti from 2 to 6 p.m. They hope to see many of their friends at this event. Her many friends visited on a daily basis and brought her Boston Terrier, Buster Brown, to visit her daily. She had a peaceful, comfort- able passing, first preceded by a harpist, then a few minutes later surrounded by loved ones and medical staff. She is survived by her spouse Beverley; her sister, Eleanor, of Payson, Ariz.; nieces and caregivers Anne, Sue and Wendy; nephew Dennis; as well as many, many good friends and loved ones, especially John and Ronnie, who were always there for her. A memorial event will be held on Heceta Beach in late spring. Donations may be made in her honor to the Florence Area Humane Society. “I thank my God upon every remembrance of you. Harvey, 79, of Florence, passed away Jan. 15, 2015. Mitchell was born Aug. 29, 1935, in Rolla, Mo. He grew up Mitchell in El Centro, Harvey Calif., where he graduated from Central Union High School in 1953. After graduat- ing, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard, where he served as a yeoman in Long Beach, Calif., from 1954 to1958. He received the Good Conduct Medal upon departure. He then enrolled at San Jose State College, where he earned a BA degree in economics in 1962. He worked for the feder- al government for 35 years, pri- marily in the Social Security Administration regional office in San Francisco, Calif. After his retirement, he took up another trade as a deckhand on the Golden Gate ferry transit system in San Francisco. Over many years, Mitchell’s favorite pastime was traveling the world, as well as being a docent in the botanical gardens of the University of California at Berkeley. In Turlock, Calif., he joined the American Legion and the Imperial County Historical Society. In Florence, he has been a member of the senior bowling league team, the “Rolling Pins.” He also very much enjoyed hanging out at Three Rivers Casino. He is survived by his sister, Juanita H. Settle of Florence; his brother, Lon D. Harvey and his wife Constance, and moth- er-in-law Ferne Mathis, all of Alameda, Calif.; his foster brother, Jack Jones of Auburn, Wash.; his nephew and his wife, Steven K. and Rebecca Williams of Florence; his nephew, John D. Harvey and his wife Kimberly, along with great-nephews Stuart, Owen and Ethan, all of Orangevale, Calif.; and his great-niece, Jennifer A. Sowers, her mother Lonnie Willett and her brother, John Willett, all of Sparks, Nev. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert H. Harvey and Mary L. Harvey; his broth- er, John R. Harvey; his sisters: Barbara H. Warren and Moretta H. Williams; his nephew, Russell A. Williams; and dear friend, Leland E. Unsell. Interment will be at Turlock Memorial Park Cemetery in Turlock, Calif., with graveside services at the Turlock Memorial Park on Monday, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m. Mitchell will be missed by his family and friends. Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. STROUD—Gayle Stroud, 71, of Florence, passed away Jan. 7, 2015. She was born Dec. 29, 1942, in Eugene, Ore., to Dr. Vern and Emmy Lou Gayle Stroud Weber. H e r grandparents, William and Emma Kyle, were pioneer set- tlers in the Florence area. Gayle graduated from Siuslaw High School in 1962, and attended Oregon State University. She married Gene Stroud on Sept. 11, 1965, and they later divorced. Gayle was an accomplished bridge player and attained a life master status many years ago. In addition to bridge, Gayle was an avid sports fan and Ducks supporter. Gayle worked for many years at the Oregon Coast Magazine. She is survived by her two daughters: Amanda Shouppe and Robin Miller; her grand- children: Dillan, Tyler, Megan and Payton; and two brothers, Jim and John. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew her. A memorial celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. NEWBY —Genevieve (Gene) Newby died Jan. 14, 2015, after suffering several years of ill health. Born in Bisbee, Ariz., she spent all of her pre-uni- Genevieve versity Newby years in Phoenix. She was a state archery champion as well as an excellent equestrian. She was a graduate of Texas Woman’s University and attended UCLA for her gradu- ate degree. After teaching for a year in San Antonio, Texas, she moved to Manhattan Beach, Calif., where she taught physi- cal education at Westchester High School for 35 years. Gene was also a tennis, soft- ball and volleyball coach. Sailing was her passion and most weekends were spent sail- ing to Catalina Island. Upon retirement, she moved to Florence, where she and her brother had built a summer home on Siltcoos Lake. She and her life partner and spouse, Beverley Rozaire- Brown, travelled extensively to many places on the globe such as Siberia, the Seychelles and Kenya, as well as visits to Europe and many long cruises. They purchased second homes in the Phoenix and the Palm Springs area. About 17 years ago, they purchased their dream home in Kla-Ha-Nee, in Florence. Gene especially loved beach walking with her dogs as well as sitting watching the ocean from her home. A consummate hostess, she loved entertaining, throwing huge parties, having friends visit, playing cards and living life to its fullest. Her kindness, wit and love for her friends will be sorely missed. She was very artistic, taught gourd-burning art and made and gave away many great gourd pieces to her friends. The last month of her life was spent in the hospital and in a skilled nursing facility.
