2 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, JANUARY 3, 2015 Siuslaw Outreach Services receives grant, donations They are written to local businesses for fuel, prescrip- tions, emergency transportation or shelter, propane, utilities, showers, laundry or other basic needs. Each person requesting assistance is interviewed indi- vidually and his or her needs are assessed. Siuslaw Outreach Services promotes self-sufficiency with classes and advice on budget- ing, planning, banking and liv- ing frugally. Executive Director David Wiegan said, “Our Emergency Voucher Fund was almost depleted by November this year, so this grant is especially welcome.” SOS’s annual budget requires donations and founda- tion grants to break even. And though the organization has a number of other grants pend- ing, “The community has been particularly generous with donations during the holiday season,” said Wiegan. “Although it looks like the economy is finally starting to turn the corner, the number of people seeking assistance has continued to increase each year.” The holiday season also saw a number of individuals and organizations raising funds for SOS. Camp Florence held a fundraiser at Fred Meyer; Crossroad Assembly of God held a fundraiser; Bettina Hannigan held an event at her home that generated many items for the SOS shelter home; the Florence Rotary Club con- ducted a toy drive and brought County sheriff offers safety tips for landslide season A number of weather-related challenges can present them- selves during the winter months, and coastal residents are no stranger to those chal- lenges. The following tips are found in the 2015 Emergency Management calendar, which can be downloaded online at www.lincolncountysheriff.net/ emergency. Snow and Ice • If a storm is forecasted: ensure you have a full tank of gas in your vehicle, enough food, water, adequate cloth- ing/blankets and heating fuel (seasoned firewood, generator, etc.) in the event of power out- ages or if you become isolated. • Maintain ventilation when using kerosene heaters to avoid build-up of toxic fumes. Refuel kerosene heaters outside and keep them at least three feet from flammable objects. • Keep snow shovels and sand to remove snow and help with traction. • Insulate your pipes to pre- vent from freezing. • If temperatures drop below freezing, prevent pipes from freezing by turning on faucets to allow a slow drip. Wind • Before a windstorm con- duct a home safety evaluation, including the garage door and nearby trees. If you have an electric garage door opener, locate the manual override. • If you are indoors during a windstorm, move away from windows or other objects that could fall. • If you are outdoors, move into a building and avoid downed electricity power lines, utility poles and trees. • If you are driving, pull off the road away from trees, over- passes and power lines. Landslides • Listen for unusual sounds that might indicate moving debris, such as trees cracking or boulders knocking together. • Avoid river valleys or low- 70th ANNIVERSARY ENGAGEMENT Bob and Peggy Jackson Huff – Rutledge Peggy and Bob Jackson of Florence celebrated 70 years of marriage Dec. 30, 2014. Peggy was a shipyard work- er during World War II. Bob served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Indianapolis in the South Pacific. After the war, he was a log rafter and worked on tug boats. The Jacksons have three children: Rob, Sandi and Ron; and 11 grandchildren. The Jacksons’ parents are deceased. Peggy has one surviving brother, Bud Ritter. Bob’s father was a logger, and his mother was a teacher. Makahla Rose Huff and Tyson Phillip Rutledge have announced their engagement to be married the summer of 2016 in Florence. Huff is a 2010 graduate of Siuslaw High School. She is currently studying dental hygiene at Carington College in Boise, Idaho. She is the daughter of Lori and Harley Huff of Florence. Rutledge attended high school in Burns, Ore., and is employed by Iron Horse Logging. He is the son of lying areas. The grant will be used for the SOS Emergency Voucher Fund. Over the course of a year, SOS provides nearly 1,000 vouchers to persons who are senior, dis- abled, low income, homeless or in some kind of emergency sit- uation.
