Siuslaw Outreach Services receives grant, donations
They are written to local
businesses for fuel, prescrip-
tions, emergency transportation
or shelter, propane, utilities,
showers, laundry or other basic
needs. Each person requesting
assistance is interviewed indi-
vidually and his or her needs
are assessed.
Siuslaw Outreach Services
promotes self-sufficiency with
classes and advice on budget-
ing, planning, banking and liv-
ing frugally.
Executive Director David
Wiegan said, “Our Emergency
Voucher Fund was almost
depleted by November this
year, so this grant is especially
welcome.”
SOS’s
annual
budget
requires donations and founda-
tion grants to break even. And
though the organization has a
number of other grants pend-
ing, “The community has been
particularly generous with
donations during the holiday
season,”
said
Wiegan.
“Although it looks like the
economy is finally starting to
turn the corner, the number of
people seeking assistance has
continued to increase each
year.”
The holiday season also saw
a number of individuals and
organizations raising funds for
SOS.
Camp Florence held a
fundraiser at Fred Meyer;
Crossroad Assembly of God
held a fundraiser; Bettina
Hannigan held an event at her
home that generated many
items for the SOS shelter home;

emergency.
Snow and Ice
• If a storm is forecasted:
ensure you have a full tank of
gas in your vehicle, enough
food, water, adequate cloth-
ing/blankets and heating fuel
(seasoned firewood, generator,
etc.) in the event of power out-
ages or if you become isolated.
• Maintain ventilation when
using kerosene heaters to avoid
build-up of toxic fumes. Refuel
kerosene heaters outside and
keep them at least three feet
from flammable objects.
• Keep snow shovels and
sand to remove snow and help
with traction.
• Insulate your pipes to pre-
vent from freezing.
• If temperatures drop below
freezing, prevent pipes from
freezing by turning on faucets
to allow a slow drip.
Wind
• Before a windstorm con-
duct a home safety evaluation,
including the garage door and
nearby trees. If you have an
electric garage door opener,
locate the manual override.
• If you are indoors during a
windstorm, move away from
windows or other objects that
could fall.
• If you are outdoors, move
into a building and avoid
downed electricity power lines,
utility poles and trees.
• If you are driving, pull off
the road away from trees, over-
passes and power lines.
Landslides
• Listen for unusual sounds
that might indicate moving
debris, such as trees cracking or
boulders knocking together.
• Avoid river valleys or low-
