Camp Adair Sentry Friday, February 18, 1944. Artist's Impressions of 270th Engineers Armed with his sketch pad. artist Tec5 Don Lynch of the Sentry staff ventured out to the range this week in search of “local color ” On range 2 he found the lads of the Trailblazer Division’s 270th Eng. Bn. firing away with their carbines. The sketches are self-explanatory and we are indebted to Sgt. Winn of the 270th for a brief history and an outline of the functions of the battalion. Bearing the» proud motto. "Essay ons," which is French for “Let Us Try," the 270th was activated as a unit of the 70th Division on Aug. 15. 1943. under Lt. Col. E. 'A Niles, who is still the unit’s commanding officer. The nucleus of the unit was a cadre from the 91st Division. Famed as the Army’s "work and fight” boys, the principal work of the engineers is the construction of roads and bridges with combat a secondary activity. They also engage in the laying, as well as the clearing of mine fields, which is quite a job in itself. Page Nine Worthy of note is the fsrt that the "fighting engineers” have qualified 99 percent on the rifle range. \ sample of their handiwork is the new infiltration course currently being used by all units of the 70th Div. It wak entirely constructed by the 276th and is manned by their combat battalion. Much of their work is difficult and requires a high degree of technienl train« ing. At one time they were called in when a water main broke on the post and with the aid of their portable water purification units, they were able to supply water to the affected area. Demolition and engineer reconnaissance are an important part of their work. At present the intelligence and reconnaissance sections of battalion headquarters are udergoing rigorous and extensive training in preparation for Army tests. | men w ho saw them in Field House I Tillamook St. Dancing 2000 to I can testify.
