Just Dial 'O* CAMP ADAIR CHAPELS” Army Morale It is significant to note what factors our ¡Responsible ■ officials consider most important toward bui building and retaining of morale. First listed: A personal development in the individual of self-pride, cheerfulness, patriot ism. Second: Religious instruction, servioe. and administration. A religious organization might have placed this first in importance. When General Marshall was asked to give his opinion on the importance of religion in successful warfare, he said: "The relation of the spiritual to ihe material (guns, planes, tanks, weapons, strategy) is as 6 to 1.” Generals MacArthur and Montgomery, JJ 11 L J Eddie Riekenbacker and a host of others know that faith, trust and confidence in a kind and merciful God will play a most decis ive part in the obtaining of our ultimate vic tory. We give all kinds of reasons why an Army unit may or may not be ready for com bat. When we say that we are readv, are we ready? What part has religion played in our preparation? Others before us have learned the hard way that it takes more than steel and endurance to fight successfully in battle.—John W. Portland. •1 How Could They Fight Wars Before? I They Didn't Have Any Telephones! I The role played by such conven- | iences as the telephone in train ing a modern infantry division for battle was proven this week with the release of figures by the Post Signal Officer, Capt. Frank Bur dick, showing it required approxi mately 502,000 official calls to put the 70th Division through basic. Cal Horn, Belt Telephone man ager for Camp Adair, revealed that the telephone follows training units right into the field, so that outfits far out in the hills are in direct touch with the Post switch- board. “It makes a lot of difference when you want something in a hurry,” he said. Horn gave interesting figures on other phases of the war effort. For example, he said, about 63,000 phone calls go into the building of a Liberty ship. He estimated the Trailblazer calls at approximately 5.122 per day. Most of these were not handled by operators, but were placed and connected mechanically through the dial system.
