Several accounts having appeared in various papers of the Slate in regard to the death of Miss Jejuni Cooley, which have not lieen entirely correct, the follow ing has lircii handed to us ns a correct version: Miss Cooley lias I i ved with Josiah 1 lowell, at Canemah, for four months past, and was a weaver in the factory. On Tues day iiioi i.iug she received two letters from N ilcni, one from u lady friend and another supposed to be from Eawton, to whom jhc w as engaged to le married. The Ja.st one has not Ix-en discovered as yet. After i ecei ing t lu'se letters she apieared ilow n .asl and gloomy. The average num ber belonging is 179. There is, compared with last year, very little tardiness ; and that is confined to a few pupils in each room. Much irregularit v has been caused by sickness, and the school has lost on-, pupil by death. That the population of the town is changing, is shown by the great difference between the number reg- ; istered and the average number belong ing. One family moves away from town and another comes to it, and the children of both are registered, but I he attendance remains alout the same. From an aver age number of 17U, we have had an av- r age attendance of 157. Tnree pupils, about sixteen y.ars of mv, who left school at recess, in defiance of the ex press comma nd I of the teacher, were promptly suspended. Two of them, having made proper ac knowledgments, have been re-admitted. One of the rooms reports three or four cases of corporal punishment, and the oti.ers do not report any. Taking the who.e school, not two pupil in a hundred have leen punished during four month.' attendance. A system of monthly reports has been adopted, and when parents do not receive a rejMirt every month for each pupil, the fault is not with the teachers. It parents will look strictly after this matter, and en courage their children to stand well in their classes, the children "will lend their ears to instruction, and go swiftly in the ways of knowledge." If parents" would insist upon regular ami prompt attend ance, they would bo taking the proper means to establish in the minds of their children habits ot punctuality and stea -i- ness; habits winch the children would carry into all the affairs of lite, and with out which nothing of importance can ever be accomplished. On Friday afternoon of every second week the pupils read eo.n jKisitions, declaim ari l sing. Many pa -cuts permit their children to stay out ou thes occasions. The parent is too weak t' stand the inipoi -lunilies of the pupil, and with a short-sighted kindness permits half a d:ty to be wasted. 1 low t an such a parent suppose that a boy will liother himself about he pronunciation, iniltviimi and emphasis of a speech, or commit it to memory, when he can tell some pltusii. It story and get an afternoon to p'lay mar bles? Or wny should a young l id. weary herself with a dictionary, or take pains to inform herself on any subject? Is ii ni easier to let tin- old composition or song go, and stay out on Friday? If parents will listen to complaints and sympathize with excuses, their children vil'l certainly supply t.'l'-m ail a!:i-i i t:i.r -' of iot.i,.tll ! asceitainly learn to tell lies. Parents are sometimes juite slioekcd to learn that the teacher has doubted the word of their Matilda -lane, who is a great deal more truthful than (Jeorge Washington and Ids little bat bet both together. Do not get angrv, the teacher doesn't know the shin ing qualities of Matilda Jane, he has mis taken her for some ordinary girl, and his ex n-rieiice has, perhaps, convinced Hint that "ordinary girls cannot always be tle jiemUd upon to tell the truth. The wonts of pupils will not be taken to account for absence, or for a good many other things. And the teachers will obsti'nately Ix-lieve their own eyes, mi l follow their own judgments, and refuse to believe that Ma tilda Jane is so exceedingly good unless they can discern it for themselves. On the otl cr hand, no boy or girl need fear to be refuse I that consideration which pa tient well-doing deserves. Soiiw pupils were absent from all or a part of the examination. Their names do not appear here. The following pupi's have an average standing of s.5 per cent. : Edward Welch, Hubert lkatie, Maria Put row, Ecn.t Kershaw. Katie llomict, May Kelly, Amelia St lling. And the following between 7-3 and nj per cent.: Sterling Welch, Anna Huberts, Clara llroughton, Minnie Hoss.Orpha Tingle, Frank Sprague. The Salmi Statesman of last Sunday says : Saturday v.e rceieved word from Mr. Ceo. Eawton, the gentleman whom we mentioned as be ing the seducer of M iss Laura Coolcv, in our issue of Friday. Mr. Eawton is at present sick and confined to his lied, but inf-jrms uti that we were prreatl v in error tu accusing him of the crime. He claims that he knew nothing of the matter until her death, and if a letter was received bv livr in which he asked to bo released from the engagement it was a forgery, as he was ready and willing to complete his part of the contract at any time. The wed ding was to have taken "place during the Fair, but at her . eouest it was post turned until to-day. In regard to her furnishing nun money ne claims also to uo talse, sav ing a cent was never given him from the lady at any time.
