A St. Louis dispatch of the 18th says: JIcKee and McGnire went to jail this afternoon, going through the streets unattended. Vineyards at Santa Barbara, Cal., are reported seriously damaged by cut worms. In many cases the crops are completely destroyed. The residence of Daniel Mingo, in Yantis county, X. Y., was destroyed by firo on the 17th, and his three children perished in the flames. John O'Connor, a notorious ruf fian and murderer of Abram Ander son, was sentenced at Louisville, Ky., on the 17th to imprisonment for life. "W. II. "Workman, a highly respect ed citizen of Los Angeles, committed snicide on the 17th. He was at one time a banker and partner of F. P. A bricklayer recently died in Lon don who was found to have the heaviest brain on record; it weigh od sixty-five ounces. The man could neither read nor write. The body of John Maclinn, drown ed last winter in the Luckiamnte, was found recentlyabont half a mile below where he 'fell in the water. Both hands were gone and his cloth ing torn off. The Torte has refused to allow a Greek man-of-war to pass the Darda nelles, declaring that the powers which signed the treaty of Paris are only entitled to station vessels of war in the Golden Horn. Enlalia Parez Gnilten, the oldest woman at the mission of San'Gabriel, in Los Angeles, 13S .years of age, has been kidnapped by her daughter and a party of speculators, who intend to take her to the Centennial for ex hibition. The Victoria Standard says: The present high price of potatoes is likely to be followed by a surplus of that crop next season. Nearly all the farmers are planting more than the usual number of acres in this ex cellent product. Tho National Independent Con vention at Indianapolis nominated Peter Cooper, of Xew York, for President, and Newton Booth, of California, for Vice President. A Philadelphia dispatch of the 18th says: At tho billiard tourna ment last night, one of tho games was between ltudoiph and Sextos, and was won by the latter, who made the greatest rnn on record, 215. Sexton's average was 23 and 3-13, the largest ever made. The game was a three-ball French carom, 300 points. -- An interesting effort, says the Springfield Republican , has been go ing on for some time past among tho political gamblers of Xew York to euchre Governer Tilden with his friend ex-Governor Seymour. The latter seems to have become tired of it, and takes occasien to say publicly and emphatically that ho is not a party to it that he must not bo re garded as a cornjictitor for the St. Louis nomination. It is well known that he and Mr. Tilden are old and close friends; indeed they have con stituted with Mr. Francis Kernan a sort of political triumvirate. But experience has shown that Mr. Ho ratio Seymour sometimes finds it im possible to say "no," and that there is a point beyound which he cannot safely be tempted. - m t Unknown. The evidence accumu lates that the Great Unknown is Gov. Hayes, of Ohio. When Gen. Sam Carey, of the Buckeye State, boat Hayes for Congress - few years ago, Gen. Sam went down to Washington under the impression that he had done a particular big thing. Ho had been in the lionise some days before any one observed, ''Let me see, General, whom do you succeed!" Hayes?" queried tho other, to Carey's intense discouragement. Tho custom of appointing young lawyers to defend pauper criminals received a backset the other day. The Judge had appointed two young lawyers to defend an old and experi enced horse-thief. After inspecting his counsel for some time in silence, tho prisoner rose in his place and addressed the Bench: "Air them to defend me?"' "Yes, sir," said his Honor. "Both of them?"' inquir ed the prisoner. "Both of them," responded the Judge. "Then I plead guilty," and the poor fellow took his seat and sighed heavily. English Craft.
