An interesting effort, says the
Springfield Republican , has been go
ing on for some time past among tho
political gamblers of Xew York to
euchre Governer Tilden with his
friend ex-Governor Seymour. The
latter seems to have become tired of
it, and takes occasien to say publicly
and emphatically that ho is not a
party to it that he must not bo re
garded as a cornjictitor for the St.
Louis nomination. It is well known
that he and Mr. Tilden are old and
close friends; indeed they have con
stituted with Mr. Francis Kernan a
sort of political triumvirate. But
experience has shown that Mr. Ho
ratio Seymour sometimes finds it im
possible to say "no," and that there
is a point beyound which he cannot
safely be tempted.

Unknown. The evidence accumu
lates that the Great Unknown is Gov.
Hayes, of Ohio. When Gen. Sam
Carey, of the Buckeye State, boat
Hayes for Congress - few years ago,
Gen. Sam went down to Washington
under the impression that he had
done a particular big thing. Ho had
been in the lionise some days before
any one observed, ''Let me see,
General, whom do you succeed!"
When tho question came Gen. Sam
responded, with a proud toss of his
bush' beard, "Why, tiie Hon.
rtutherford B. Hayes, sir!" "And
who the devil is the Hon. llntherford
B. Hayes?" queried tho other, to
Carey's intense discouragement.
Tho custom of appointing young

received a backset the other day. The

lawyers to defend an old and experi

his counsel for some time in silence,
tho prisoner rose in his place and
addressed the Bench: "Air them to
defend me?"' "Yes, sir," said his
Honor. "Both of them?"' inquir
ed the prisoner. "Both of them,"
responded the Judge. "Then I plead
guilty," and the poor fellow took his
seat and sighed heavily.
English Craft. On the road to
Epsom, a mustached youth, on the
top of a drag, evidently ambitious of
being mistaken for "an officer," thus
saluted a fat coachman, who was
gravely driving his master and fam

shirt collar? How dare you come to
the Derby without a shirt collar?"
Jehu growled forth, without lifting
Ins eyes from the horses: Jw the
