Vv Dunbar has been lecturing on temperance in Lane county. A. M. Waddell, living near Amity was thrown from ids carnage and seriously injured. S.O(H) bushels of wheat were sold at 82 cents a bushel, at Eugene, one day last week. lloseburg has two women who are 'from the shoulder." Ilich diggings have lately been struck on the North Umpqna Yamhill county has 2,(1(10 scholars reported, only 'JI2 of whom attend school. Eleven deer were killed by two hunters in the Calapooia mountains one day last week. A sixth order light is talked of for Sand Island, at the mouth of the Columbia, and a fog whistle on Til lamook Head. Marion county horses are afflicted with the blind staggers. A lad named Ralph Challoner, em ployed on board the British ship Ophelia, at Portland, fell through the hatchway and was killed on Sat urday last. Persons are malting the prelimin ary survey for a canal to take water from the Santiam to Marion Station, for propelling purposes. They find the same water can be used at Marion, then at Miller's and then at Jefferson. The total length of the canal will be but seven miles. John Gay was arrested at Wheat land a few days ago for selling liquor without license. He was taken to Portland, and, according to reports, he is not the Gay fellow he was. "Old Homist," firough the col umns of the Salem Statesman, calls loudly for a brass band. Says the Jacksonville Times: F. Elliott and F. Williams recently re turned from a hunting expedition which proved very successful. Thev camped about six weeks in the Dead Indian country, and during that time Killed ivt deer, four bear, one pan ther and several wild cats. We un derstand that they are curing the meat with the intentian of taking it to A irgmia City, Nev., for sale next spring. A squirrel club has been organized at Teumile, Douglas county. At the end of the hunting season, the mem ber who gets the most scalps takes the "pot," which is made up of wheat, two bushels being contributed bT each member. The Jacksonville Times advocates the erection of a distillery in its neighborhood, and the patronizing of home manufactures. Mr. Stukely Ellsworth, a promi nent Oregonian, and well known member of the bar, died at LaGrande on Friday last, of congestion of the lungs. The subject of Judge L. L. Jfc- Artlinr's lecture, delivered for the benefit of the Eugene Library, was 'The . Founders of Our Native Tongue." Several families of the Hood River colony who went into Washington Territory have returned to Hood river. Twelve hams were stolen at Al bany last week by the well known 'Johnny."
