Any food that increases the .r:moiMit of gliicoso in the system is fattening, provided the functions of digestion Chd assimilation are not disturbed by disease. Cream, sugar, swet t fruits, and nil vegetables that contain saccharine matter, such as beet-, turnips, green peas and "green corn are fattening in their nature. Veal, pork, fresh fat beef, roasted and rare; fried and s.tewOd poultry all tend to increase p;h. Olive oil beaten up in a mayonaise with the yolk of eggs, a little mustard, salt and vinegar, and used as a dressing for salad, particularly lettuce? is con sidered good for fattening. Toe upon-Washington Irving.; From tlio Baltimore GaaeLtc.l In 1833 Dr. Nathan C. Brooks, principal of the Haltmore Female College, editor aud proprietor, in tlie above year.of the North American Magazine, w rote to Edgar Allan Poe, w ho was then living in Philadelphia, requesting him to contribute to the . . . . - -. 1 uiiivuiuu nil iij.uc.iu itieniuy iuc tire works of Washington Irving. LThe following reply was received by Ur. Urooks: "PHIIiADELriJlA, S?pt. 4, 1S3S. "My Dr-vn Sxa: I duly received your favorwith the $10. Touching the review, I am forced to decline it just now. I should bo most unwill ing not to execute such .a task well, and this I could not do at so short a notice, at least now. I have two other engagements which it would be ruinous to defer. Besides this', I am fust leaving Arch street for a, small Louse, and of course, somewhat iu confusion. "My main reason, however, for de el'ning is w hat I at first alleged, viz; I cculd not do the review well at short notice. The truth is. I can hardly say that I am conversant with living's writings, huviug read noth ing oi his siace.X was a boy, save his 'Grenada.' It would be necessary to I give his entire works a repera'sal. Yousee, therefore, the diQieulty at once. It.. is a theme vpou which I would like very much to write, for there is a vast deal to be sai.l upon it. Irving is much overrated, and a nice distinction might be drawn between his just and surreptitious and adven titious reputation between what is due to the pioneer solely, aud what to the writer. "The merit, too, of Lis tame pro priety and faithlessness of style should be candidly weighed, lie should be compared with Addison, something being hinted, about imitation, and Sir) Itoger De Coverley should be brought up in judgment. A bold and a priori investigation of Irving's claims would strike home, take my word for it. The American literary world never saw anything of the ki id yet. Seeing, therefore, - the oppor tunity of mak'ng a line hit, loam un willing to hai.ird your famcj by a failure, and a failure would assur. il ly bo the event were I to undertake the task at present. "The dilliculty: w ith you is noth ing; for I fancy you are conversant with Irving's works, old and neiv, and -.-would hot have to read for the task. Had you spoke decidedly when I saw you"' I would have ad ventuitd. If you can delay the Tie view' until the second number, I woiild bo most lrappy to do my. best. Uut i his, I presume, is impossible. "I have gotten nearly out of my late embavassmewts. Neilson could not aid me, being much pushed him self, lie would,' no doubt, have , aided me, if possible. Present my respects if you see him. Very truly yours, o "Edcak A. Pok. "Suppose you send mo proofs of my ariicles; it might be as well that is, if you have t';ne. I look anxiously for the lirst number, from which I dat the dawn of a line liter ary day in Baltimore. c "Alter the loth I shall me more at Lisure, and w'dl be happy to do you any literary servicus in mv power. You have bat to hint. Ik" A. P." Dr. Brooks, ilnding it impossible to delay the'proniised review of Irv ing, wfote it himself, and the mau ncr in which he bundled the Subject drew for'h life highest laudations of Poe. The article referred to by Poe, of which he desired "proofs," was "Ijigeia," which appeared in the JL';'iiiic in September, lboS. Many of the articles from the pen of Poe appea-ed originally in the Xurth A)neri:a.i 3L:ja.i,ie, which sub sequently became the American Museum. Afnong these we mention "The psycho of Zenobia," "Literal v Small Talk," and 'JTho, Haunted Palace." - t-c Pronoscsl .ViolWion at Clerical Pal w lo.ir rc ia Irissi;. O"5 From the lall .Mall Gnzdi?. It appear.", if we may trust the Cologne (ia-.t'Hc, that a new ecclesias tical measure is in contemplation fur the coming Session of Parliament. The new bill is: to be an Abolition of Patronage bill, somewhat similar to that passed by the English Parlia ment the year before last for the Scotch Kirlr, without, however, pro viding compensation- to the patrons for tue rights they are to be asked to surrender. By the seventeenth arti cle of the Prussian Coustitation the pror.pect of a revision of the law of patronage was kept iu view, but Qi-Qq ly.jO no steps have bjren taken to carry the intention into effect. In the whole uf Prussia there are con nected with the Catholic Church, over 1,000 ecclesiastical ollices in the gilt of private; patrons; about 200 in that of the State; and the gic-at mass, rir 5, 20(). are iu that of the bishops. The abolitio-i ofccler'cal patronage wo aid therefore be equivalent to a revolution in the church. What is lininosml is to substitute election by l,',,.
