The principal havigable livers are tho Columbia, which is uavigabhj throughout the year to the Willamette, 100 miles from its mouth, t-ienco eastwardly with two interruptions at the Cas cades and the Dalles, where there ar.) railroad portages, to Priest's flap ids in Washington Territory. 3'.)5 miles from tho ocean, and on its tributary, tho Suaho river, to Lewis toi, iu Idaho, 470 miles from the ocean. The Willamette river is nav igable for ocean steamers and sailing vessels to l'ortl-.n 1, 110 miles from n tho sea, and for river steamers for 110 miles during .six months of the year, and for 50 miles during the whole of the year. The Oregon and Cali fornia railroad is now completed from x oruanu to Uoseourg, in tlie ump qua vallev, a distance of 200 miles It follows the east bank of the Wil lamette, and touches all the leading towns of the Slato. From Uoseburg a .tage route, 27o miles long, leads to Kidding, in tho Sacramento val ley, the present terminus of tho Cali f(irni:t imi'Iim'!, m Another railroad, the Oregon Cen tral, is in course of construction from lortI.-in.il up the vest bank of the river. The Governor of the State, in his last message to the Legislature, de livered Sept. 10, 1S71,' says: "The value of our exports has reached a sum certainly exceeding ten millions of dollu-s. I estimate the export yaluj of our wheat and flour at nearly four millions, gold; oats, other grain and fruits, one million; wool, hides meats, cattle and horses, two million salmon one million, five hundred thousand; lumber and coal, one mil lion; gold, silver and iron, one mil lion five hundred thousand. The fruits of Oregon are un surpassed in quality and uuequaled in abundance.
