tributary, tho Suaho river, to Lewis

ocean. The Willamette river is nav
igable for ocean steamers and sailing

110 miles during .six months of the
year, and for 50 miles during the
whole of the year. The obstruction
caused by the falls of this river at
Oregon City, has been overcome by
means of locks. Several tributaries

fornia railroad is now completed from
x oruanu to Uoseourg, in tlie ump
qua vallev, a distance of 200 miles
It follows the east bank of the Wil
lamette, and touches all the leading
towns of the Slato. From Uoseburg
a .tage route, 27o miles long, leads
to Kidding, in tho Sacramento val
ley, the present terminus of tho Cali

Another railroad, the Oregon Cen
tral, is in course of construction from
lortI.-in.il up the vest bank of the
river. I'iffv miles of it are now com
pleted and onerated
Various railroads are projected to
connect Oregon with the Pacific
roads and the railroad system of the
Atlantic States.

The Governor of the State, in his
last message to the Legislature, de
livered Sept. 10, 1S71,' says: "The
value of our exports has reached a
sum certainly exceeding ten millions
of dollu-s. I estimate the export
yaluj of our wheat and flour at nearly
four millions, gold; oats, other grain
and fruits, one million; wool, hides
meats, cattle and horses, two million
salmon one million, five hundred
thousand; lumber and coal, one mil
lion; gold, silver and iron, one mil
lion five hundred thousand. This
exhibit for a population of 100,000

The eminent statesman, the late
William 11. Seward, spoke as follows
in the published account of his visit
to Oregon:
"It is in Oregon, so far as I am
able to determine, and nowhere else,
that tho Tacilic climato with its cold'
summers and mild winters, embra
ces and produces a higher and more
varied fertility than is elsewhere re
alized. The fruits of Oregon are un
surpassed in quality and uuequaled
in abundance. Wheat and other ce
reals grow and ripen hero almost
without care, as abundantly as they
do w ith the use of irrigation in Utah
while the native soil, everywhere
covered with fern and annual flow
ers, provokes the farmer to the culti
vation of the potato and other escu
lent roots. What acquaintance I
have had with the adventurous
miners, descending the f'olnl;,i
river, satisfies me that if it were pos
sible for tho laborer to fail in other
occupations, ho would even in that
