The Connecticut Radicals, according to a statement of the Hartford Times, have nominated for Governor a man who was never heard of beyond his own town, until he alone, of the for ty million people of the United States, distinguished himself by fir ing in Norwich a cannon salute over Grant's aciion in "breaking;, up r the;! Louisiana Legislature by Federal bayonets. Having done this, they 1 adopted a platform committing the party in Connecticut unreservedly to Grant and the Louisiana policy. The convention was managed by Federal olhoe-holders and their allies; and it also passed a resolution "utterly condemning" what it calls " those unwarranted denunciations of the Federal Government" which have been uttered by the Boston Faneuil Hall meeting, the Cooper Institute gathering, and other assemblages irvesK!ctive of party. By the words "the General Government" the Con necticut Grant party mean U. S. Grant. Senator Tiixjrman and the Pres idency. Wo find the aunexed in our exchanges: Members of Congress just returned from Ohio, are aitthor ity for the statement that Gov. Wil liam (Oh Pvise Up) Allen, of Ohio, has in his private residence, at Chil licothe, a full sized picture of his nephew, Senator Allen G. Tiiurnian. iiiere is nothing, of coarse, unnat ural in this, but under the frame he has caused to be placed in big letters " Our Next 'President." In view of tho fact that Gov. Allen was himself thought U have Presidential aspira tions, this act of his would seem to indicate that he has cleared the track in favor of the younger member of the family. It settles one disputed noint. and that is that ho is not a j candidate against his nephew. In contingency of the Senator's chances wilting, tnere is no telling, however, what the old man might do. The Record says: E. M. Waite is publishing a pamphlet of GO pages for the Oregon Pioneer Association, to contain the constitution of the so ciety, the addresses delivered last summer by Hon S. F. Chadwick at the reunion, the remarks on the Or egon question made on the same oc casion by Gov. CI rover, quotations from the journal and register of the retmious of 1S73 and 1874, and several interesting communica tions from members of the society. Mr. "Waite has procured a handsome electrotype of the State seal under the provisional government, which is truly a tasteful and appropriate design, and will adorn the title paje. The pamphlet will possess consider able interest to all early settlers of Oregon. . y The Gkanoes. Some of our ex changes are trying to figure up the aunual revenues of the Society of Patrons of Husbandry. A corres pondent of the Chicago Timet makes the following estimate: "Initiation fees alone paid up to July last amounted to b MM) ,000. The month ly dues yield $2,400,000 per annum. The six-cent quarterly dues to the State ("ranges amount to 480,000 p.r anucm; in addition to which, large sums are derived from charters and dispensations. What precise sum the National Grange has now on hand we are unable to state, but it must, we should think, be a large amount." IIesolttions Arxji'Tiiu. We have received the following resolutions which were adojited by Marshtiehl Grange No. 1, P. of H., at a recent meeting, from the Secretary, John M. Mills. Ji:solred, That we, as Grangers, disapprove of the employment of Chinamen as laborers by any mem ber of this Grange. Hesoired, That the Secretary fur nish the Enterprise, Oregon inn and Bulletin with a copy of this resolu tion. The Oreijoniaa of Wednesday doub les on itself most handsomely on the Louisiana question, and while it mentions the two Democrats who sign the majority report, leaves out the Radicals. We are beginning to think that the Oreyonian will not do to bet on. It is neither milk nor water, but badly mixed, and is try ing its prettiest to ride two horses. In time, we expect, it will find out that this dodge does not win. A ASHixoTox, Feb. 22. Federal Administration 1 -has made a net gain of nearly one and a quarter million of votes. There has been no such political overturning in so short a period in our history as a people. Never be fore has a Federal Administration re ceived so rapid and-: overwhelming a condemnation from those who placed it in power. There has been a stead y opposition gain everywhere. New York has jumped f rom 53,000 Repub lican majority to 62,000 opposition majority and Pennsylvania has changed from 137,000 Republican majority to 7,000 opposition majori ty. , The opposition has possession of the four greatest States of the Union New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Illinois. Two years ago it possessed not one of these." , Extua Labok for the Assessor. This will be a hard year's labor on our County Assessors. In addition to their usual annual assessments, says the JJt-mocrat, the law requires that they shall this year take the census of their several counties, for which blanks will be furnished them by the Secretary of State. The cen sus will comprise the following head ings: - Number of legal voters;"of males 21 years old and upwards; of males under 21 and over 10; of males under 10; of females IS and upwards; of females under 18 and over 10; of females under 10; number of acres under cultivation; bushels of wheat, rye, bailey, oats, corn, potatoes and apples raised last vear; tons of hav, pounds of wool and tobacco, ounces of gold dust produced; number of sheep, hogs, cattle and mules owned by each person; number of barrels of salmon, and baskets of oj-strs sold; number of ponnls of butter and cheese made and mariceted, etc In order to assist the Assessor and facilitate his labors wo would sug gest that our readers have these items written down and prepared by the time he comes around. Of course it is understood this is not for the purpose of kixation, but for the dissemination of valuable informa tion that this census is taken; hence our citizens need have no fear of making as good a showing as the facts will warrant. To Commence. The San Francisco Bulletin of a late date t-ays that " work on the Oregon and Winno mucea railroad will be began at both ends in the spring. The company have secured means enough to insure the completion of the work at an early day." This , is , good news to Oregon, but it may not be entirely reliable. Since this statement has been made public, we may as well tell what we were assured during the last session of our Legislature: A gentleman who ought to have known what lie was saying, and who evi dently spoke from authority, told us that if the Legislature passed the bill then pending, the "road would be built immediately, whether Con gess gave any aid or not." -Wd trust that it may, and believe it will. Died. We are pained to be called upon to announce the death of WTiI-' lard A., only son of the late Hon. Amory Holbrook, which occurred at Portland, at the residence of his mother, last Tuesday morning. He was a young man of generous heart, and was universally beloved by all who knew him. His age is 2') years. He has been in poor health for sev eral years, but when we saw him, only last week, he informed us that he Mas much improved, little think ing he was so near the final homo of all tho Jiving. He had his faults, but his good qualities more than counterbalanced them. Celebrated. The Various mili tary organizations of Portland cele brated Washington's birthday iu an appropriate manner. Its readers are found in every State and Territory, and its quality is well known to the public. We shall not only endeavor to keep it fully up to the old standard, but to improve and add to its variety and power. The Weckh Sun will continue to be a thorough newspaper.. All the news of the day will be found in it, condensed when un important, and at full lenghth when of moment, and always, we trust, treated in a'clear, interesting and instructive manner It is our aim to make the W'rckli Si n the best family newspaper in the world. It will always contain the most interesting stories nnd romances of the day, carefully selected and legible printed The Agricultural Department is a promi nent feature in the Weekly Sun and its articles will always bo found fresh and useful to the farmer. The number of men independent in poli tics is increasing, and the Weekly Sun is their paper especially. It belongs to no party, and obeys no dictation, contend ing for principle, and for the election of the best men. It exposes the corruption that disgraces the country and t hreatens the overthrow of republican institutions' It has no fear of knaves, and seeks no favor from their supporters. The markets of every kind and the fash ions an: reported in its columns The price of the Weekly Sun is one dollar a year for a sheet of eight pages, and fifty six columns.
