The ThuJs special says it is reported that the l'rcbident favors a scheme for a grand system of internal improvements, with a view of reviving business. Republican politicians regard it as a line scheme to revive the Radical party and buy the people's vot-s with the people's money. Lamaistixe, Wis., Nov. 27. Rus set Rrown last night killed his wife, by a blow on Uie head with an axe, while she was in bed. He fled and' Las not been heard from. AVashixgtox, Xov. 28. The Su preme Court of the United States has rendered an important decision as to the rights of Indians in lands of their reservations. The decision is that Indian tribes r'.o not own the fee to the lands within their respective res ervations; only tenants of the United States to whom alone the fee belongs. The decision holds timber and min erals are a portion of the royalty. Indians can neither sell one or lease the other. New York, Nov. 27. A Kuoxville letter indicates that Andrew Johnson has no prospect of election to the Senate to succeed Rrownlow. He is one of a score of candidates of Union antecedents. Governor J. C. Rrown is thought to have the best chance of success. Atlanta, Nov. 20. George Sirums (colored) was hanged to-day at Cov ington, Georgia, for outraging a white woman in 1873. He confessed the crime yesterday. New Yoisk, Nov.' 30. The Presi dent commenced his message yester day. Ho does not intend to com plete it till the day of the meeting of Congress. It wiil not be printed, and no copy will bo made till the morning of the assembling of Con gress, when a copy will be given to the Associated Press. - -New York, Nov. 30. !Mayor Have meyer visited Flushing to-dav. On returning the train broke down. He w as obliged to walk two miles against a strong wind. He died of apoplexy shortly after arriving at his oflice in the City Hall. New York, Nov. 20. The first year of Tweed's imprisonment ex pires to-day. His counsel, believing the sentence of successive terms of one year each to bo illegal, will, it is said, within a day or two, apply for a writ of habeas corpus to bring Tweed before the Courts to have the sen tence revised. Ciucvfjo,. Dec. 2. Washington dispatches represent liutler as deter mined to force the Civil Rights bill to a vote. Consternation prevails iu the ranks of its opponents because of the rumored intended absence of some of the members during the first two weeks of the session. New York, Dec. 2. William M. Tweed escaped from custody to-day when returning to Blackwell's Is land. Removed. The U. S. Surveyor's oflice has been removed by order of tho President from Eugene' City to Portland. The last election demon strated the fact to the Radical politi cians of Multnomah that the Federal offices then there, besides complete control of the county, .was not enough to hold that part of the State in tlie interest of the Radical party, and as they have given up all hope of the. State, it is proposed to center all the Federal patronage at that place to try and recapture Portland. The pension Hice has been taken from this place, and it would not surprise us much to hear any day of an order to move the laud office to Portland. If Portland desires to get theanimos ity of the interior towns, she needs onl3- to " after these little Federal offices which can do her no particu lar good while their removal from tho smaller towns is a material detri ment to such places. Heavy Sentente. Some time since Major Kggleston was tried by court martial at Portland for being a de faulter while acting as paymaster. Tlie charge was sustained and the sentence was confirmed by the Presi ident, which is as follows: "To be cashiered; to forfeit to the United States all pay and allowances that may be due him at the promulgation of this sentence; to be imprisoned at hard labor for five years in a pen itentiary, and thereafter to be fur ther confined in such penitentiary until he shall refund the amount of embezzlement 12,310 40; and that the crime, name and place of abode and punishment of the 'accused bo published in the Portland newspa pers, and in tho city of Elmira, New York." J Rkstiu ctive Fii:k. The new Trin ity Church caught fire last Thursday afternoon, at Portland, and theentiro roof was burned oif before the fire could be got under control. The fine organ and inside furnitnro were badly damaged by water. The mem morial window of Rishop Scott was not broken nor tlie other large one in the west end of the building. The damage is estimated at $0,000 which was covered by insurance. The Vestry have already taken steps to repair the building,"' and tho in surance companies have paid over tlie money. Declined. Gen. Banks, who ap pears to be more modest than the Oregon inn, has emphatically declined having his name used in connection with the Speakership of the forty f mirth Congress. He has no dispo sition to become the slaughtered lamb of tho Oregon Independents. Rather bad for the OrcgonidH. Deskkted r.x Uis Fkiexds. And now comes that Radical journal, the Roston Advertiser, and says that the " great smoker," the heretofore puissant Grant was not made for a statesman, and if ho carries the country through his second term without disgrace he may consider himself most fortunate. TiiEin Exccses. The Louisville Conunercuil declares that it was a "multiplicity of minor causes" that produced the result on. the 3d ult. We shall find out all about it after a while. Let us have patience. i Mr. Mudge, of Clatsop county, has just gathered a second crop of Bart- ''''t l'cars from ins irees tins 3-ear, They are about as good as the first. Oregon CityIts Watloii Adapta- r .Manuiactures. Oregon City is located on the Wil motte River at tho Falls, and is about 125 miles from the mouth of the Co lumbia and Tacific Ocean by this route. This city can bo reached at all seasons of the year and at any stago of water by large fine river steamers, and about one third of tho year, by sailing vessels carrying one thousand tons, by the assistance of a small tng-boat. This place is snrronnded bv the best portion of agricultural land in the State and by adding to it the west part of Washington Territory, Oregon City is in the centre. It will be admitted by all who are acquainted with this place and its great natural advantages as a manu facturing town, that, perhaps, it has no equal on the Pacific Coast. Na ture Las carved it out in the right spot for a noble purpose water-power and conveyance, with railroad privileges, belong to this place. The Willamette falls are an im mense water-power, amply sufficient for all purposes and easily made available. There are exhaustless beds of iron ore in tho immediate vicinity from which largo quantities of iron are already made, and sur rounded by the finest forests of tho best kinds of timber. If selected, it is equal to the best imported oak, ash, maple, fir and cedar, to bo used for manufacturing pnrposes. It ap pears that the people here have thoughtlessly, overlooked this great out-cropping hidden wealth to a groat extent, considering their privi leges. True, noble woolen mills hero tell well by their thousands, and other manufactories built on the bed-rock look well. Yet, when we hear the great mass of people speak ing from the north, south, cast and west, we hear but one voice saying, it is not enough. This place offers inducements enough and ought to be the great work-shop of the Pacific coast. Manufacturing is sadly neg lected. Not a shovel, spade, steel rake, fork, sythe, axe, chisel, ham mer, foot adze, drawing knife, nor a tool of any kink; no establishment for the manufacture of such things here; how sad to think of it! This county is not growing rich as it would were there more manufactur ing carried on, for which she has ev ery facility. It takes too much mon ey to pay for imported tools, machin ery and goods. Tho success of the people is sadly impaired by this state of affairs, and we cannot prosper if it continues to any great extent in the future. F . Thanksgiving at lil waukle. After doing justice to fat turkey and obese goose, the citizens of this place met at tho school house and finished by a grand entertainment, consisting of recitations, charades and tableaux, richly interspersed with music. After a Thanksgiving Anthem, suug by the Sell wood family, quite a damper wa-s cast on tho affair by the orator of the evening, who an nounecd that while we were enjoy ing the festivities of the day, tho good people, where he had been, were suffering by the burning of Trinity Church, in Portland; but, notwithstanding the sorrow occa sioned by this loss to a neighboring city, tho affair'' was a complete suc cess and reflects much credit on the parties who planned it. No programmes were issued, con sequently it would be difficult to give comment upon each perform ance. Many of the little speakers, on tlie rostrum for the first time, reallv ' distinguished themselves. Among the rich things of tho even ing, tho charade "Windfall," and the song by Mr. Google, deserve to bo mentioned. Decidedly the finest thing was tho recitation by Mr. Hendec. The teacher, Mr. Saunders, whose commanding appearauco and cour teous manners qualified him for the position, announced the programme. To Mrs. Keauan and Miss Ross belong the credit of planning the affair. Neither appeared conspicu ous in the 2erformance, however. After the entertainment a number of the young men eqnipped with -bells, horns, guns, and other chiv alric paraphernalia paid their com pliments to a couple supposed to be enjoying honey and moonshine. May JUilwauliio enjoy manny sue 11 entertainments. SlMOX. Tho Mountaineer says: On last Shndav afternoon, at the Baptist SnndaV School, the Rev. George Chandler, while teaching the Bible class, was suddenly stricken with taralvsis. Ho was immediately re moved to Mr. Joseph Bcezley's resi dence, where he remained in an ap parent unconcious state. lie was taken below on Thursday by his son-in-law, W. Lair Hill, who arrived here on the day previous for that pnrpose. Mr. Chandler preached tho sermon in tho morning, and ap peared in his usual good health. His age is about sixty years. The Yamhill Courier says the Yam hill river is very high, and the cur rent is so high as to threaten the safety of all the bridges over the stream. Tho new bridge on tho Sheridan and Amity road, which was built a little over a year ago at a cost of $3,000, was destroyed by the rag ing torrent, and the rapidly accumu lating drift-wood forebodes other dis asters. ft if I-V . til. 1 . One of the points in the impeachment of Andy Johnson was that ho " bandied epithets with-a jeering mob;" in fact, that he was wanting in dignity.
