Centen nial Celebration Committee Mr. Bennett, of California, will not be reappointed Pension Agent, being objected to by the .Department lie cause of the loose presentation of his accounts. Washington, Dec. 14th. Several prominent Denaior express surprise at the action of the House in devoting so much time to the debate on the salary question, when the country ooks for legislation to relieve the present financial embarrassment, and restore confidence in monetary affairs. The Senate is ready to enter upon legislation at once if possible, and afford the necessary relief before the 1-11 T J .. ... . nonciays. it is certain that there is less disposition in the Senate to agi tate the salary question than in the House. There is a general indispo sition among Congressmen to increase taxation, and it will not bo done without the necessity be shown. No hasty action is anticipated. Tho Treasury Department is somewhat pressed for money, not only by the falling off of revenues, but by the extraordinary appropriation of S4. 000,000 or 5,000,000 for naval pur poses, and the redemption of the 20,- OOO.UUO loan of Washington, Dec. 15. Secretary luchardson in a letter to ltepreseu- tative Dawes reiterates his previous ly expressed views that it is better to obtain the necessary money by taxa tion than by increase of the National Debt by loan. He says he selected tea and coffeo liecause the public would feel the tariff on these less than on any others. Tho Secretary to-tiay, aiier too necessary examina tion, ascertained that toe public debt has increased since the 1st instant $5,000,000. Among the bills introduced in the House to-day was one by Harris to put printing paper and other mater ials on the free list; also one by Co burn grautiug a pension to the widow of ueneral Canby. In the House, Sargent introduced introduced a bill relative to the pub lic lands in California, fixing the uni form price Jit $1 2o per acre for min eral and agricultural lands. Mr. Page introduced a bill making it a felony to contract for theemploy- ment of Coolies in this country. Mr. Nesmith A bill to ascertain tho losses by Indian raids in Oregon and to transfer the management of Indian affairs to the War Depart ment Mr. Mitchell A bill directing the secretary ot War to cause surveys to be made to determine the practi cability and cost of removing ob struetions at the Cascades and the Dalles, on the Columbia river. Washington. December lb. lne bill repealing the Bankrupt Act pass ed the House to-day. The same dispatch says it is gener ally apparent that the Salary bill, as reported to the Ilonso yesterday, will pass that body, but that the amount of the salary will be lixea at $5,0(0 by the Semite. The Democrats of the California Legislature have nominated John S. Hasrer for the unexpired term, and Thomas Farley for the long term. They have a good prospect of elect ing both. The Independents adhere to Booth, but a majority of them are Democrats, it is expected that enough will eventually come over to the Democrats to elect both. A. little matter of exienses of our last Legislature incurred upon the tax-payers is the new apportionment made by that Radical body of wisdom. It increased the numlter of members nearly one-third, and hence the ex penses of the next Legislature will be proportionately greater. That uii,y was targe enough, and the in crease is justthat much extra expense. lr. S. A. Clarke has again assumed the management of the Salem States inan.
