On Tuesday of last week, Mr. David Markwood called at my office and re quested me to go w ith him to a joint a short distance below Oswego and hold an Inqiiest over the lKidy of a er sou who had lieeii found by Captain Pease of the steamer Senator on libs trip up to Orecron Citv on the morning of that day. "He stated that the bod v had not boon identilied, but he believed it to be the body of his son, who was drowned near the mouth of the Clack amas river, on the 11th of Octolnr. He stated that he could not lind Cor oner I loss, and he had been told that it was the duty of any Justice of the Peace to act as such, when the Coroner was absent or could not be found. I said to Mr Markwood that I did not wish to perform tlie duties of Coroner, and that lie had better wait for Dr. Koss as I believtd he was somewhere in tlie citv, and he would probably lie in his ollice soon. lie said he could not wait for him as Cant. Pease was waiting with his lioat to take us down, and if I would eo it would be a great favor to hini, as he wishiHl to bring tlie body up on Hie evening boat, should it prove to be the body of his son. 1 told him in that case I would go w ith him. We went inniKMliatel v to the Senator and Cant. Pease landed us at the place w here the body waslyimr; a jury was summon ed and a verdict rendered, and the bodv which proved to be the body of N. K. Markwood w as brought to t ro tron Citv on the boat, was placed in a hack, when the father of the deceased took charge of the body to be convey ed to the residence of the idllieted fam ily a short distance from the city. o fee or reward lias been claimed "by me for tlie services rendered, and I should despise myself if a thought of receiving any should have found a lodgement in mv heart. The foregoing is a j lain statement of facts and for tiie service rendered by me as above stated I am charged in the last week's Kntkiumusk with the crime of robbing the widow and orphan chil dren of X.
