t Mi I if i eljc lUccMnNutcvprisc. OF FICIAL PIPE R OF CLACKAMAS fOl'MT. REGOX CITY, OSEGOX, .0V. 29, 157 Thc Destruction of the IVoolcn Mills. ! Elsewhere we give a full account j of the destruction of those in air- nificeiitmill?, which were not only j the pride of our city, but of the I whole Stale. Tlie fabrics manufac tured at the mill have gained a world wide reputation, and their destruction cannot fail to be a loss j to our entire State. Oregon City will feel their destruction most severely. AJont one hundred j white operatives are thorwn out of employment, and the loss of rSO. 000 capital in such an institution will take a long time to be replaced. MVc are not informed positively whether the present company pro pose to immediately rebuild, but we are satisfied that they cannot allow the property saved to go to ruin, and that they will sooner or later put the mill into operation again. But that is not what is needed. The miil should be rc Inilt at once. A meeting of our citizens was held lastVTednesday evening for the pur pose of giving expression of their sympathy and to raise substantial aid for rebuilding. Full proceed ings had at this meclinir will be found elsewhere in this issue. The meeting was well attended, anil appropriate speeches were made by many of our citizens, and a ppirt of sympathy and enterprise which should give eucouragment to the owners to rebuild at once. The principal owners of these i mills are Messrs. Jacob :ros., W. S. Ladd, and Urowii Eros. "Ye learn that the insurance on the building. $77,500, will nearly re place the building and machinery and put it in operation. The unjust reports which have gained circulation and which are greatly magnified, iif regard to people refusing to aid in the sav ing of goods, we do not care lu re to repeat. They are not made by any responsible persons of our city, and hence the people here are not to be held accountable for these utterances. Tlie citizens all worked nobly to save property and to check the flames. All did their duty. Every encouragement should be given to the Company to induce them to immediately go to work o - and rebuild, and we believe our citizens will give every assistance in their power to the accomplish ment of this end. Ihe employes who" are thus thrown out of employment deserve the sympathy of our citizens, and i we hope it will not be long before j they may again be engaged in their occupation. Notwithstanding our sister city at Willamette Falls has received a terrible blow by the destruction of the woolen mills, which throws a large number of operatives out of employment, its friends long ago. in previous disasters, adopted the motto which foims the caption to this article, and will never despair of' their hopes yet to see the place a large and manufacturing city. A low of well-built stores lining for the most part both sides of the principal street for the distance of nearly half a mile, and magnticent warehouses and tionrimr mills, with a river tilled with steamers, attest that there is no room for doubt but that Oregon City w discontinue to row and eventually Income what has often been predicted for it the Lowell of the Pacific- coast. the water fowei: Afforded by the Willamette Falls at Ore. -on City is enormous, and of such extent that when utilized it will turn the shafts of more mills and manufactories than are in ex istence at the present time on the whole Pacific slope, and then have waUT to spare. This water power is created by a descent of the Willamette river of about l'JO feet in a distance of two miles, with an actual fall of seventy feet over an iinp"vihable solid basalt wall, and has been computed by competent engineers to be equal to 2-10,000 horse power. Another es timate made at a very low stage of the river fixed the volume of water passing per minute over the Fails at nine hundred, thousand cubio feet. It is difficult, if not impossible, to realize, by a mere statement oi' figures, an ade-epiate conception of the immense power indicated by them. In order to give a better idea of its vastuess, we will illustrate by comparisons. A great amount of machinery may be driven by an engine of 2 horse power, while that ef the Willam ette Falls is equivalent to 12,000 such engines. Again, the practi cal experience of manufacturers in form us that one-horse power is sutlicieut to grind one bushel of wheat per hour. Allowing for the necessary power te drive the ma chinery for bolting, ete, there is power enough hcr-i to grind 200, 000 bushels, or 40,000 barrels of wheat per hour, or annually more than live times the whole amount of the average wheat crop of the United States. A V A I I. A I".I KIT Y Op WATER TOWER. There are four prominent things which render this water power peculiarly available : 1, The solid rock forming the bed of the stream and foundations for build ings; 2, The facilities for building canals parallel with the river ; IJ, The situation, being at tide water, enabling shinments of heavy ma- terials; -1, Its eo'4raidiie;it po sition, be ing apm oae haide oy j ailri-a.ls ami steamers from a;l .. . . e ( .
