I - - ' Admirable tetter of Hon. J. II. Slater His Patriotic Stand for Oreeley. La Grande, Oukgox, August 16th, 172. M. M. Pomehoy : Sir, My attention has just been called to the tact that in your paper of August 3rd my name is giTeu among others as one to whom "communications" may be addressed in the interest of the proposed Louisville Convention. This, of course, implies that I am favorable to that movement and willing to work to make it a success, which I bear to inform you is altogether a mistake. Tbe publication of 017 name in the connection referred to places me in a false position at home and abroad, to correct w hich U the ob ject of this letter. "While a candidate from onrown ranks would have been very much more acceptable to me than Mr. treeley, 1 am not, however inclined to make or assi-t in making, factious oppo sition to the fairly expressed choice of tbe convention of our party at Baltimore, which expression undoubtedly reflects the will and wishes of vast majority of the Democracy of the Union. 1 shall support the ticket as pre sented at Haltimore and Cincinnati, not be-eau-e it, or the platform, is all that I could wish, but for the reason that Greeley, the Republican, will, in my judgement, make a better President than Grant, the c-rruption-ist, nepotist and gift taker, aud for the fur ther reason that in the present cond ti n of partus every road which leads cwi Greeley and Brown leads to Grant. Even silence at the poiL on the part of Democrats will be di ec aid to Grant, inrsmuch as such with holding of the ballot by Democrats will, by every ballot so withheld, increase the chances of Grant's success. The proposed Louisville Convention, if it means anything, and is to have any lnnuerce whatever in the November ilection, means the election of Grant. It cm have no other purpose, and unless it shall have influence to nroduce iust I that result, it must of nece-s'ty prove to be a most miserable failure, this moveoient may be glossed over as a patriotic effort to "te-organize the Democracy," but all the glossing that can be bestowed upon it will le insufficient to conceal the fact that it is, in spirit, purpose and intent a mi vetnent directly in the interest of Grant. It i-urged lhat 11S- between two Ipubl cans crats can have no choice. Ibis is ;i Denio- m inge nious play upon words, but it i in no sense a frank or honest statement of the case. Mr. Greeley and Grant ate both Republic ins in name, but here the parallel entirely ceas es. Oiie, for more than three, years of his iidtni mstration as Chief Eecutive has, by all the vast powers of his exalted station, sought to make the military superior to the civil oower of the Rep iblic. lie teas asked for, j and a servile and truckling Congress has grata 'd him extraordinary powers, danger ous to the libeities of the people, and of doub'ful constitutional nronrietv, all of wl.iel .di powers he has exercised for the pur- j oose of tiersonal and party aiirandisement. And net content with the limitations of the origiua! act as to time he has sought by further legislation, to retain these extraor dinary powers until alter the November election f..r no other approved purpose than to possess the power to silence the voice of opposition in the pri-on eel!, and re-elect himself to the Presidency by the power of the bayonet. Under his udministration the right of 1 ical sei:-govennnent has been do n;cd, in many of the iate insui r ..-ctiouary Mates nil! the voice of their people, throng! -h the fall d box. has been silenced, and tLetr elections have been turned into a farce. Corruption in oiiice has increased to an alarming extent. Nepotism has been prac liced to the disgrace of the nation, and in terference in the local concerns of the States has become chronic with the Administration at Washington. All these evils are autago nized by M r. Oreeley, and theis-tics present ed are: The supremacy of the civil over the military power ot the government ; the right of local seli-government by the people ; free elections, without the interierence of l'nl r:0 authority or Federal dictation, or adminis trative manipulation ; honest men iu office, and an honest and faithful discharge of oliic'al du'y. Is it possible that Democrats have ro choice in these issues "i True they are ten dered in the person of a Itepublic in ; but con D.-mocrats refuse their support to Mr. Oreeley and his s-de of these issues, and ned fad to peiform the Maty which belongs to the honest citizen and Voter V It appears to me that the prac'ic-d le son taught by experience is, that if we would engraft, l'cm ici atie uiea-ui es and the theo ios upon the administration of govern mental aflairs, we most at nil times be ready and wiling to do what nu.y be d.me to that end, red not. refuse to do what can be done because more cannot be accomplished. We can secure much in the election of Mr. O reclej', we ou;ht not to refuse this because we cannot secure all that we might by the election of a Democrat. Acting upon Pus principle, I propose to leave nothing undone on my part to secure the el ctora! vote of Oregon lor Oreeley and Itrown. Wi b great respect, Sir, I am Your most obedient sei vaut, J s. Glorious and de'.ightfut as the Summer weather is, its tropical heat is a severe trial to the vital powers. Even the strongest are sometimes prostrated by its effects. The common phra-e applied to Precondition of the body is "sreneral debility." Now, sren oral debility arises from and includes a va riety of ailments. Tbe liver is more or less affected. Cue bowels are either constipated or less affected, the bowels sire either Con ti pated or too much relaxed, the stomach but half performs the work of digestion, the ap petite is poor, and the spirits depressed. This i.s calleit general debility. It is a gener al disagreement of all the physic d functions, ami requires as a icmedy a medicine that will regulate ttiem all. Hostetter's Stomach Bitter's is especially adapted to this purpose. Its general operation is not contmed to a single organ. If the liver is affected, it re stores its tone. If the stomach is t jrpid, it regenerates it. If the nerves are tremulous and weak, it braces and reinforces them. If the mind, which ever sympathizes with the body, is gloomy and despondent, it re lieves the difficulty and soon brings the w hole mechanism of the bodv into harm my with the laws of health There is no civilized nation in the West ern Hemisphere in which the utility of Ilos tettet's Stomach Hitters as a tonic, direct ive, antibilious medicine, is not known and appreciated. Throughout the Tropics it, is considered, both by the people and the pro fession, the standard secdij. While it is a med. cine tor all seasons and all climate-, it is especially suited to the complaints gen erated fiy the weather, being the purest aud best vegetable stimulant in the world.
