Oregon. EWIORIAL COMMENT BIG BOOST FOR GOOD ROADS Plan to Hold a Mcnstor Meeting In St. Paul In December. Unloss soim-tliing unforeaeen occurs St. 1'aul will prolsbly entertain ix>ii>e time next December the biggest g<xxi roads meeting ever held In Minnesota or the surrounding states. Geotge W Cooley, state highway eugineer. Is plannlug on such a meeting, and it the uecessary arrangement can be made, as now seems probable, it will be bold. The idea of bolding a monster g>xxl roads meeting was conceived by Mr Cooley after the meeting recently held in St. Paul, to which the county com mlsaioners as well as others interested in gixxi roads were invited. This meet ing showed the widespread interest taken in the matter throughout the state. He expected between li»> and 200 to attend, but the attendance grew to about 300. says the St. Paul Pioneer Press. The same feeling has been shown in the meetings which he has addressed in the smaller towns throughout the state, the farmers com ing in to attend the meetings In large numlx'rs and showing au active Inter rat in the gisxl road problem. "if the meeting Is held it will cover the field thoroughly.” sahl Mr. Cooley "it will 1« an ex|»isition of roadmak ing machinery and materials, with practical talks by men of wide experi ence in the various details of the wsrk. In a large meeting of this kind much t>etter results can be obtained than by the smaller local meetings because in stiv’j a meeting us we expect to h id the manufacturers will have exhibits of ail kinds of machinery used in road making, and we can have speakers of wide experience at such a meeting which is impossible for all of the smaller meetings. question box would Ye a feature, ami through this means any one confronted by special problems In roadmaking would tie able to get the advice of the men quali fied to give It. “I have not yet decided definitely on the plan, but there Is a general de mand for such a meeting, and If It can possibly lie done the plans will bo ‘carried out." Mr. Cooley's plan Is to eliminate the “hot air” talks at*out good roads gen erally nul to make it an instructive meeting by havrag men go to St. Paul who know alsvut the practical details of roadmaking. Those who will go will do so for the purpose of learning something about the building of good roads, and It is the Intention to meet this expectation fully. The meeting will probably Inst one week. The ex hibita will cover stone crushers, road rollers, steel mid concrete bridg ■ work, culverts and all sorts of machinery and material used in road building.
