One year $1 Six months Three months republican tiokot for Unitotl Stilton senator, we can now begin to under stand why Jonathan lionrne said he would not spend a cent to be re-elected to the senate. He can probably see that with four republicans out against him for the place he will have no trouble in landing the nomination. Summons. Eugene Register Eastern Oregon people should unite on Judge Lowell. He could put Jonathan to sleep, politically, and in our judgment is far the best man of those meutioned above. Morrow county residents think a lot of Stephen A. Lowell. THUBSDAY, July 13, ..1911 7IAKE HO CMl.ifiQF, rt has been previously announced that the county court of Morrow couuty would likely abandon its iiresent method of condtictingcounty road work, sell what equipment the ounty has in the' way of teams, wagons, etc., and revert back to the old way of doing things; a way that everybody knows has proven a fail are. While the court has been subjected to some very severe criticism, much f it seems to not be merited, and the tiazette maintains that unless a bet. ter method can be suggested than what is now followed, the court should carry on the work as it has fi-t-fn doing. It is no more expensive than was the old plan, and there is aoqiiestion whatever but that much better results have been obtained. Morrow county, by its tax levy, raises the sum of $16,000 annually to l.e expended on roads. At the last Electing of the county court in Uma tilla county, bills were allowed for road work alone, " not including lu'idges, amounting to above $16,000; this for only one month's work, as the court meets in that county every month. Yakima county, Washing ton, raises by special levy, $70,000 to be expended upon its public high ways annually, and many of the comities of Oregon are expending rast amounts of money each year on their roads, yet our court is expected to do great things on an allowance that should be perhaps three or four times as large in order to get the re quired results. The plan as it is followed in this eourity at the present time, was adopted by our county court after having attended a meeting of the rounty judges and commissioners from all over the state, down at Portland last winter. The great majority of opinion or that meeting lavored the plan; many counties had already been working it and were well pleased with the res'ults.and what seemed to be the best way to liandle county road work to the majority of those then present in this convention, was thought by our fommissioners to be the best way to tlo the work here. "ov all things of this nature have to be worked out largely by way of experiment, and when a good plan Sw discovered, we think it should be persistently followed up that per manent results may be obtained, nud we urge the county court to stay on the job and work their plan to a fin ish. Good roads is what is wanted by everybody. It takes time to feuild them, and when you are re stricted in the amount of money at your disposal, it necessarily takes just so much longer to get around end give the people, what they want. J'.nt it is false economy to do work n the roads that will not last, and t x.i much money has already been pent in former years in doing tem porary worn. wilier counties are tit learning this lesson, and Morrow eoiinty will learn it. Umatilla County will have ajgreat wheat crop of about 6,000,000 bnshels. Thiscounty grows about 1 per cent of the cereal produced in the United States. After nearly three years' work, the first two miles of the Celilo canal have been completed by theconstruc tion firm having the contract. This includes the upper end of the canal and Celilo Lock. It Is expected that by another three years the canal will be open to navigation. After visiting 45 towns of Eastern Oregon, J. J. Sayer, field secretary of the Oregon Development League is back at the Portland office, much impressed by his trip through the in terior. He is enthusiastic about the possibilities and the future in store for Eastern Oregon. Mr. Sayer starts this week for a similar trip through the coast counties. Banks of the state show good gains in deposits and resources as com pared with similar figures complied last vear. State Bank Examiner Wright finds deposits have grown over $2,500,000 and in practically all departments of the banking business there is good advance. The latest report sets forth conditions as they existed at the close of business July3. A letter to this paper states: "I notice what the Gazette has to say about the proposed Morrow County Hog Club for boys. We have two boys that could join; one is 14 the other 12. "We believe in do ing all wa can for the improvement of the county." This is the way to look at it. This is a move to im prove the county. It is something practical. There is much talk about advertising our resources, but there is no better advertisement than to produce the goods. i,et us get tne boys and girls to work along practi cal lines and produce stuff that will take the prizes at the district and state fairs, and make it known that no part of the state can beat us. We can do it, Are you with us? Citation. THE COUNTY COURT OF STATE OF OREGON FOR The Gazette is beginning to hear from some of ourpeople on this ques tion of Boys Hog Clubs for Morrow eoiinty. This is a great scheme, and tie hope t hat tin- boys and men of the county will wake up to it, and that tog.'ther we may be able to get oiiK.' good, live clubs organized T!.e business men of the different ominunities are undoubtedly inter ested in this movement; if you are, crop us a line ami let us knov about it. Anything that h"lp to bnlid the t; the county and bring it resources tthe front, should appeal to our h isiness interests, and here is a fine -Uanee to do this. THE MOR ROW COUNTY.
