Sheepmen Hold Lambs.
A. L. Bunnell and A. E. Harden,
Klickitat sheepmen have returned
to Goldendale from Glen wood
where they looked after their flocks
on the summer range in the Mt.
Adams country. They report a
number of buyers in the field for
Iambs and mutton sheep for the
fall market Buyers are offering
to contract Spring lambs, on the
rane for $3 50 with a 5 per cent
cot. The sheepmen are not dis
posed to sell at this figure as the
grass is good and their sheep are
in excellent condition. Some' of
them expect to receive as high as
$4 without a cut for their lambs,
but the ruling price will probably
be $3.75 to $3.83. while choice lots
of spring !ambs may bring $4. The
output of Spring lambs and mutton
from Klickitat county will be un
nsoally large this year as weather
conditions daring tbe lambing sea
son were very favorable and many
growers will take advantage of the
high prices offered and sell close.
Sheep from the Mt. Adams Forest
reserve are driven from Glenwood
to Lyle and shipped from there to
Portland and Seattle markets. A
few years ago nearly' all of the
sheep from this territory were mar
keted at Troutdale but for the past
two or three years Sound buyers
have been unusually active in this
field.

A company headed by H. V.
Gates and taking in local and east
ern capital has filed water rights
on the John Day river, about twelve
miles above Monument, for the
purpose of constructing a power
plant to supply Heppner with light
and power.
The company has surveyed out a
ditch and power site and filed
rights on it and has also surveyed
out a dam site where the river can
be put over a fall of 70 feet. It is
not likely that either project will
be touched until next spring or
summer, as Mr. Gfttes desires to
travel in Mexico and other states,
looking over different projects
where dams are used. From either
project a plant with a capacity of
developing 2000 horsepower is to
be installed, which will give Hepp
ner and Morrow county plenty of
power and light for some years to
come.
Survivors of Civil War.
Salt Lake, Utah, Aug. U. The
number of survivors of the civil
war at the close of the last fiscal
year, as shown by the report of the
commissioner of pensions, was
620,985, according to the report of
Grand Commander Neviue, before
the encampment of the G. A. R.
here. The number of eurvivorBon
the pension rolls May 31, 1909, was
596411. The amount appropriated
for pensions during the year was
162,000,000.
