JSSS3 A DEBT OF HONOR. The Debtor, the Creditor and the Promissory Note. The inconsiderate creditor pressed for immediate payment of his promis sory note. "But I have no money," said the debtor wearily. "I saw you pay that man who just went out," retorted the creditor indig nantly. "That was a dobt of honor," replied the other, with hauteur. The creditor immediately tore up the promissory note which he held in his hand and threw it iu the fire. "So is mine a debt of honor," he re marked simply. So far so good, and the matter is pro ceeding along the proper lines for such cases made and provided. The debtor assured himself that the promise to pay had been really con sumed. 'Tardon me," he then politely said, "but you tore up that note voluntarily and from mercenary motives. I can not therefore recognize it as a debt of honor." Which proves that a nice sense of honor Is n good thing to have lying about handy. The creditor smiled Indulgently. "Oh, that was only a copy I tore up," he replied. He took another note from his pocket. "This Is the original, you see," he remarked, with pardonable pride. Which proves again that a careful man before burning his bridges assures himself that the ferry Is still doing business at the same old stand. Ex change. A Good Verdi Story. Here !s a charming story about Ver 6v. A farmer living In the depths of tne country was very desirous to hear one of the Illustrious composer's op eras. So. better late than never, he took his ticket, traveled up to Milan and. securing a good seat, heard "Aida." The farmer was very much disappointed and wrote to Verdi to say so, adding that he did not like the music at all and that under these cir cumstances he hoped that Verdi would see the reasonableness of at once re turning him his money. There were his railway fare, his ticket of admis sion and his supper at Milan, for which he inclosed the bill. The grand old maestro entered fully Into the humor of the situation. He wrote back a polite letter regretting that his music had failed to please and inclosing the railway fare and the price of admission, but he added that as the farmer would have to provide himself with supper at home he could not admit the justice of that part of his claim and he absolutely declined to pay for his supper at Milan. Zeke Was Right. A farmer employed a boy to guard his strawberry patch from birds. The berries fancy fruit a big as peaches kept disappearing, ami the man sus pected the boy of rating them. So one morning lie came down to the patch, looked it over and then said: "I know you don't touch those lerries, my lad. but Zeke says you do. To day I'll test you just to convince Zeke." He took out a little lump of chalk and pretended to chalk the boy's lips, but really It was only his finger that he rubbed over them. ".Now," he said, "when I come down here this after noon we'll see who's right atwut you. Zeke or I." And with pretended carelessness he tossed the chalk on to the ground. On bis return, some hours later. It was plain who was right. The boy's Hps were chalked with a white, stiff layer half an lnTta thick. Lot Angeles Times. AW The Unsophisticated at tea. According to a local paper, one of the petty officers of a man-of-war nt tho New York navy yard recently made a requisition to the paymaster's office for two "horse pipes." The story goes that the poor man meant "hawse pipes." Now, any one who knows what hawse pipes are will wonder what he wanted with them. I suspect, some one was playing n practical joke en him. The same paper gives another alleged occurrence which shows how little is known by some of the naval recruits of nautical terras. Tho recruit in question got a monkey wrench, a donkey engine, the dogwatch and the cathead so confused in his noddle that he called for "a watch dog to stand by the cat engine" and referred to the captain ns a "donkey head." As a re sult the veracious chronicler doposeth that the offender was committed to the ship's brig, there to repent and learn better. Both yarns are probably of the type usually "told to the marines," but nevertheless it is a fact that many ludicrous mistakes of the kind are made by those whose knowledge of the sea Is limited, and many practical jokes of which they are the butt are made on the unsophisticated. Ship ping Illustrated. Ancient Concrete. That tho Romans were very familiar with concrete and gave consideration to its use examination of the concrete work in the forum clearly .shows. Their concrete contained generally only two kinds of stone, travertine and selcie, in equal parts. Selcio is a hard, closely knit rock, very' similar to our bluestone or trap rock in color as well as quality. Travertine is a volcanic rock not so hard as selcie, considerably lighter in color, and was desirable on account of its porosity, which insured a good bond with the cement. Iu all the Roman work the combination of the travertine and the selcie is clearly distinguishable. Cement Ago. Ably Defined. A certain archbishop when asked whether it was a grievous lie for a woman to misstate her age replied? "A lie may be defined as a statement made by one rational being to another rational being with the intent to de ceive. Sow, as no rational being would think of asking a woman her age with the expectation of being an swered truthfully, one of the elements of the lie is lacking, and the woman's statement cannot, strictly speaking, be defined as such."
