The experiments with Burbankg Thoruless Cactus in Eastern Ore gon, and especially in Umatilla county, will be looked to with great interest Tbe stories told of this new plant, and even what the Wizard Burbank himself says, while hard to believe, but coming from such a man as Luther Burbank, are worth at least consideration and investi gation. If half of the claims are true of the Thornless Cactus, all other forage plants will, in time give way to the great discovery. During the past two years the Lnitea states department or agri culture has dispatched agents to all parts where cacti grow to look up this matter and last season gave some valuable information gather ed from those who had for years been feeding the wild, thorny ones to their stock with good results when properly prepared by fire, though it is acknowledged that thus prepared a portion of their nutritive value is lost and though the dangers of Joss from feeding to stock are lessened, are not by any means safe, even by singing or any other process, while many of these new thornless ones are as' safe to handle and as safe to feed as beets potatoes, carrots or pumpkins. By actual weight in the summer of 1906 in tbe cool coast climate of Sonoma county, Cal., on heavy, black "adobe bo1, generally thought wholly unsuited for Cactus isurbank Opuntias produced the first year, si months from single rooted leaves, planted about June 1, an average of 47i pounds per plant on one-fourth acre, . yielding at the distance planted (2x5 feet) ftt the rate of 180,230 pounds (over IK) tons) of forage per acre. Some of the best varieties pro duced very much above the aver age, though planted much too closely for permanent field culture; yet these notes are of interest on a subject of which little has been known. These improved Opuntias must of course be fenced from stock; the leaves to be fed to the Btock when most needed, and in countries where great numbers of valuable Btock are lost in times of unusual drought will be of inestimable value and will also, without doubt, prove of great value in Jess arid countries as a common tarm or orchard crop even on the best agri cultural soils but more especially on birren, rosky, hill and moun tain sides and gravelly river beds which are now of no use whatever.
