WONDERS OF IRRIGATION Water Makes the Desert Bloom. ( Special Correspondence. McKenzie Bridge, Oregon, Aug. 1 To see a vast desert covered with sage brush and juniper and the soil composed of sand and rock, being converted into a garden spot producing grains arid all kinds of vegetables, is enough to cause the average person, coming f-om the vast emi-arid region of Kastern Ore gon, to r-top and wonder just where the American people will leave off home building. Leave I'rineville in the morninir, drive down the Crooked river toO'Neil, where you lunch, and then out on top where you come upon the great desert. A des ert has this been since the beginning of time, hut few are the years left leniain ing in which to call this vast territory of sasre brush, sand hud juniper, a desert. Canals and small l iterals are to bn j found running in most every direction j across this plain anl small fitrms have ! heen and ate being lanl out wliere the I juniper and sane brush have been ! cleared away and in their stead is to tn j found hav fields arid truck patches lo k- j ing as thrifty as thouirh they were i trrowiou upon tue most feitile soil of i the Willamette valley. The DesChu'tBB Irrigat;on Co . of Bend, the Columbia Southern project, Laidlow and Squaw Creek projects are doing the work which is bniijiirjjr this immense baren waste into a state of cultivation where homes for many thousands will be made in the next few years Te xater is furnished by the DesChutes river and Squaw creek and enough of it they seem to have. I have traveled in all carts cf Wash ington Idaho and Montana and have been pretty thorrughly over the eta'e of Oreaon, but never have I seen puj1i immense juniper as grow on the Great desert in Crook county. The desert i covered with a firest of junipe- and I noticed many trees t hat would measure more than three feet in diameter at the base and would probably tower into the iky nearly one hundred feet. The homehuilders who are clearing, their property, use thi timber for fence poets and wood. Many times did I wi-h, while driving through thiB thirty-six miles of sage brush, sand and juniper, that Morrow county could have been blessed with a stream of water like the DesChutes. Take that country lying north of Heppner, Lexington and lone and put the water on it that is being Hbsorbed by the Great Desert and there we would have homes for double the amount oi people that will be placed under the ditches in the projects just enumerated. Our soil is far superior, for under ordi nary circumstances our farmers raise good crop upon that soil, whita here on this desert nothing can be produced without the aid of water. Leaving the Great Desert at Sisters, a small village at the foot of the Cat-cade mountains, aud up the mountain side thru a forest of Bull pine and hr to the snow line at the base of the peaks of the Three Sisters, you suddenly .drop out onto a crater of lava which extends for five miles along either side of the road. This is a sight that is worth the trip from Heppner of five days. This bevond a doubt is one ot the grandest sights to be found in the state of Oregon and it will certainly leave the imp-ess- ion upon ones mind that things were very hot up there on the summit of the Cascades one day. Great cracks in this rock and jagged peaks with honey combed edges are all around you and the feeling that you are upon a storm tossed sea comes back into vour mind many times ere you are across and onto the head waters of Lost Creek. Lost creek heads at the base of the Three Sisters, runs into the lava and is lost tor manv miles, as this flow of lava Continues for several miles down the mountain side on the Western slope, bnt finally iumps out from 'neatn the rocks running a s'ream as large bs the Umatilla river and empties inti the Mc Kenzie river j 1st below Belknap-pi in's Bekuap springs is a beautiful and pictureeque p. ace, uituated on the bank of the McKenzie and lus a wonderful strong flow of hot wat-r.
