Celebration Success.
(Continued from ppo one.)
The HeppDer baseball team
composed principally of the high
echool boys crossed bats with the
Eight Mile team at the high school
hill grounds.
While the Bcore was high and
the game was characterized by nu
merous errors on both fides, still
there were many interesting plays.
The Ifeppner boys started off in
the lead and seemed to have the
came in their pockets but the
Eight Mile boys got their second
wind in the fourth inning and
encircled the diamond so many
times that it looked like it was all
off with the home team.
, The Heppner boys again got
down to business and won out by
a score of 13 to 15.
After the ball game the balloon
ascension was announced and the
large crowd assembled on the old
Heppner hotel lot on lower Main
etreet.
At this trial the inflation of the
bag was a snccess and the balloon
ist entertained the people with a
splendid exhibition.
Prof. Wardell mingled with
the clouds at a heightb of about
8,000 feet and made a pretty para
chute jump landing in a field above
town without a scratch.
After the balloon ascension the
races in the streets were pulled off.
The 100 yard foot race was won
by FFalter Gay.
Vic Groshens won the fat man's
race and it is said that it was the
stoutest race ever run in" Heppner.
Harry Jones took first in the
boy's race.
Gay Bros, were the winners of
the three legged race.
The Seconal Day.
The second day opened with the
mercury considerably higher than
on the Fourth.
The forenoon was taken up with
horse races at the depot.
There were three exciting races,
Lafe Penland's mare, Gid Hat's
mare and Ralph Jones' mare were
the winners.
In the afternoon the Heppner
baseball team and the Eight Mile
boys again met on the school house
diamond.
The home team pitcher, Pete
Eaton's got warmed up on the
eecond game and the Eight Mile
boys certainly got what was eom
ing to them.
It was a one sided game in
which the farmer lads went down
to defeat to the tune of 11 to 2.
Following the ball game the
backing horse contest was an in
teresting feature which was palled
off on the ball grounds.
There were a number of bad
horses and they were ridden by
expert riders.
Lee Wells, from Wheeler county
carried off tke fine saddle as the
first prize, and Ad. Moore 'was
awarded the second prize a pair
of fine shaps.
The first accident daring the
celebration, but not of a serious
nature, occurred during the buck
ing contest Mrs. Brown of Mon
ument who was there with her
little son, was knocked downn
the wild rush to get away from a
bucking horse. The little boy
was struck with the horse and was
knocked down. He was picked up
in an unconscious condition, but
fortunately was not seriously hurt.
Mrs. Brown escaped without
injury.
At the second balloon ascension
tberw was an accident aDd it was
almost a miracle that the ending !
was not fatal.
Fred Feltman who was inside ol
the balloon bag to keep the can
vas away from the flames during
the work of inflating, was over
come with gas and heat. He was
being talked to by the aeronaut
all the time, who understood the
dangerous position. When Felt
man failed to respond to the calls
of the balloonist, he well under
stood Feltman's position. Grab
bins the ropes from the parachute
be yelled for the men to let go
and when the balloon shot into the
air Feltman was found prone on
the ground, his face black with
soot and unconscious. Everyone
thought that he was dead, but he
was resuscitated by hard work and
a liberal application of cold water.
The balloon was not properly
inflated aud this placed the bal
loonist in a dangerous position.
The balloon came down rapidly
and Prof. Wardell received a hard
jolt when he struck the ground.
Outside of the two accidents,
everything passed off in perfect
order. Everything was orderly
and a good time was the general
verdict. '
The dance at the commercial
club house was well attended on
both evenings.

A quiet yet beautiful and home
like wedding took place at the res
idence of S. W. Meadows in this
city on the evening of July 3,
when Mr. Edward Adkins and
Miss Clara Brown were united in
marriage, Rev. Joseph Buie offi
ciating. Dr. and Mrs. Winnard this week
received a telegram bearing the
sad news of the death of Rena,
Higgs, the oldest daughter of Dr.
and Mrs. Higgs, formerly of Hepp
ner. Dr. Kistner reports Mrs. Will
iams, who was quite seriously in
jured at her ranch last week, to be
rapidly improving.
Mrs John Patterson left this
morning for Pennsylvania to visit
her mother, who is quite sick.
Claud Knowles is back from
Seattle and has accepted a position
in the Star restaurant.
Mrs. J. L. Hockett is here from
Portland visiting with friends.
