of coal is almost unlimited and

The days of hand shearing are
about over. The good old shears

were scarce. No one is learning
to shear by hand. The work of
the past year has demonstrated
the fact that machine shearing is
more economical and better for the
sheepmen. That extra pound of
wool has been a great remover of
prej udice.
The pupil who struggled hero

through the year, but failed on ac
couot of sickness and other una
voidable hindrances, is deserving
of recognition, sympathy and en
couragement at the hands of every
loving parent and generous citizen,

Portland business men who
visited Heppner on their recent
itioerary through Oregon and
Idaho, expressed genuine surprise
at the quality and extent of the
Heppner coal fields.
After they return home and cast
up the needs of the state, from
their observations, will they de
mand that a railroad be built into
that coal field?
Really, is it not a crime upon
the part of the railroads to refuse
to build to the Heppner coal fields,
when the need of fuel is so urgent
in Oregon?
No matter who owns the fields,
no matter if the railroads cannot

not be controlled by the railroads,

those mines.

fruit conditions, Harry Cummings,
the county fruit inspector informs
the Gazette that Morrow county's
fruit crop has not been materially
iujured by jthe frosts.
Iu some localities the fruit was
injured, hut generally speaking
the crop will be about average.
