Copyright, 1!X)5, by J. W. Muller. Coming homo from the village one ufuruoon with hiai horse and bugjey, with tho linos loose In his hand ad his thoughts iixed ou the hay crop, Jabess rnrkcr suddenly ran across something to attract his atteutlou. Two miles from home nnd on a barn by the roadside two men were at work pasting up circus posters. T.hey had tho front of tbe barn pretty well cov ered, and they finished their work as Jnbez sat and looked at them. There were lions, tigers, elephants, giraffes, galloping horses and what not, with a woman walking n tight rope and a clown making, everybody laugh, and the good old man, who had never seen a circus in hfs life, even as a boy, sat there long after the men had departed and figured It all out lu imagination. Presently he beard a voice saying: "Dura my buttons, but I'm goln' to take In that clrcHS or bust!" It was his own voice, and It almost jumped him off the seat. His heart was In his mouth for a moment, but then he gained courage to say "getap" to he old horse and muttered to him self: "Tes, sir, I'm nearly sixty yeara old and never saw a circus, but I'm goln' to begin now. I expect ma will make a terrible fuss over It, but I ain't goln' to let her turn me aside. I dunno what's come over me, but if it's wicked to go to a circus then I'm goin to be wicked." lie reached home to unharness nnd go to work again, and he said nothing of what was In his mind until supper had been eaten and the milking done. Then as ho sat on the piazza with his old wife he carelessly remarked: "Ma, I see that George Williams' bam Is all covered with circus pic tures." "And he a Christian man!" gasped tbe wife. "Waal, you know, folks don't look at circuses the way they used to." "What do you mean by that, Jabez?" "Why, a circus ain't considered wick ed. I dunno as they ever was wicked, but folks used to think that way." "I don't want to hear you talkln' that way, Jabez. Tbe circus was al ways wicked and always will be. It's one of the broad roads leadin' down to perdition." "I've never seen a circus," said Ja bez after awhile. "And you never will not as long aa you live with me." "I've often wondered where tho wick edness comes in." "Then you must be blind! Don't wo men, or things called women, dress up la short klrt& and ride hossback and Jump through hoops? Can you Imagine anything more wicked than that?" "What makes you call that wicked?" "Because it ia, nnd you know it, and there's no use to talk about it any more. I've lived with you for thirty- nine years, &aa 1 Knonv you rrom head to heel. Jatz was Toxi tonkin' of goln' to that circ??" "Kinder thlnkin'." "I had a feelin' in my'ones fiilt you was. Waal, you stop it. I won't &u?e It for a minute." "Say, ma, I'm a-goin." ".Tnhe?! Pnrker!" .7 ." .if TVn never xes, bit, rm a-gw"- , , : J been to a circus, but I'm goto' t ;9 one in before I d. i m a-goin' to see tbe elepUo.n8( iion3 an(j tigers, and I'm a-gotn to see them women in short Rlrts. I don't believe it'll hurt ma any more than to see a boss race at the county fair." "But I tokl you to turn your back when they raced." "Tes, but I wanted to see which hoss came In ahead. I saw, and I don't be lieve I was one mite the wickeder for lt "But a circua, Jabez a circus! I tell you you cant go. If you do you needn't expect to find me here when oo come home, i never couw live, with you for an hour agMn." Jabez Parker was the soul of good nature, but when aroused he had a streak of tbe mule in htm. He had aid he was going to the circus, and hie wife's opposition only made him the more determined. The subject waa dropped that evening and was hardly referred to during tile next week. Then the date of the circus came along, and one morning Jabez said: "Ma, I'll be home In time to do the milkln'." "What do you mean?" "I'm goin' to town to see the circus." Tbe wife looked at bim and saw that be was determined, and she said no more until he was ready to drive away. Then she observed: "Goodby, Jabez. I don't 'spose we shall ever see each other ag'in." lie echoed her goodby and drove oil, and she sat on the piazza nnd cried for an hour. She was still at it when some one drove up, and nho looked up to see ber minister standing before her. To his Inquiry as to the cause of her sor row she told her tale, and when It was finished he Bald: "There's my wife nnd boys out in the carriage. Hurry up and get your Sun day clothea on." "But what for?" "We'll find room In the carriage for you, and I'll buy your circus ticket" Jabez got borne half an hour ahead of hia wife. lie was looking around the sitting room to see If she had left a ote or anything, when she entered and said: Say, Jabez, I said 'twas rvleitsd, but after seein' all tbe animals and tha women In the short skirts and havin all the" peanuts and lemonade I could hold I have changed my mind. It ain't wicked a bit, and if you'll start that Cre like a good man I'll have supper oa the table In three shakes of a lamb's .. ... M. QUAD.
