j r j lJ zs Lru j v uj f The Heppner Gazette Established March SO, 1883. ISSUfD THURSDAY MORNING. Fred Warnock SMered at the Postofflee at Heppner Oregon, a second-class matter. Thtksday.... September 13, 1906, This is btate b&ir wees and there will be a bi" attendance lrom a) over the country. From 30,000 to 35,000 letters find their way to tbe dead letter o&ce everv da v. MaDy of these tetters contain money without any wav to find the owner. A little more care would save much trouble for both the people aud the govern meat. Democratic National Committee man Sullivan says that Bryan is in politics because it helps tbe gate rewipts. Bryan was poor vrben hrt entered the political arena. He is rich now. It would seem that Sullivan's remarks are not without fouadation. Tbe Willamette Valley Develop ment League is an active organiza tioo, and is doing much good. Tbe fifth quarterly convention was recently held at Forest Grove. The meeting was a good one and fall of business. Such work will help to keep the valley on the more. THE PALACE HOTEL IN NEW HANDS E. C. Kladdock Who Recently Pur chased Popular Hostelry, iow lu Charge. WILL INCREASE WATER SUPPLY. Jftitch Creek Will be Turned Into Willow Creek by Dltaui Ol Ditch. J. J. McGee, the surveyor, re turned from Ditch creek, yeeter day where he has been surveying a diteb to divert the waters of Ditch creek to Villov creek. The scheme has been taken up by the Morrow Ware house Mill ing Co., and the plan is to cut a big ditch from Ditch creek across the Ditch creek flat to the Willow creek basin. While Ditch creek is only a small stream, still it will add Borne to tbe volume oE water in Willow creek and will not only help to increase the water power of tbe Heppner flouring mill, but will also help out the people who irrigate along Willow creek. Tbe mill company is also con eidering tbe proposition of putting in a nine from the flame ditch r i which will furnish water for irri gatiog the lower portion of Hepp ner. Tha oarstion of taking the waters of Ditch creek has been talked of for years. It is estimated that the cost o dicing the ditch will be only about 1200. E. C. Maddock, of Oregon City, who recently purchased the Palace hotel of this city, took charge Tuesday morning. The Talaoe, which is one of tbe best hotels in Eastern Oregon, under the management of Mr. Maddock will not lose any prestige. Mr. Maddock comes to Heppner very highly recommended not only as a business man and citizen, but is also a man of long and thorough experience lu the hotel and )t't- taurant business. He steps into the new field with perfect understanding of the needs and demands of the public u the hotel business. Mr. Maddock after thoroughly surveying the situation already contemplates many improvements and additions to make the service of the hotel better. The following is taken from the Oregon City Enterprise: Mr. and Mrs. Maddock have been residents of this county for many years. He is known to everybody in the county, has been henff and was a candidate for that office at the recent election, osing to Mr. Beatie by tbe narrowest of margins. He has a host of friends here who will be sorry to hear that he and his family are to leave. They regret going, too, but Mrs. Maddock has been in poor health for some years aud has been advised by her phy sician that a hotter, drier climate will probably prove beneficial to her. That is tbe determining cause of their selling their beauti ful home and departing from among the friends of a lifetime. Those friends wish the climate will prove all that is hoped in bettering Mrs. Maddock's health and that the family will prosper and be happy in their new home. Conner. B. R. Patterson went to Fort land, yesterday. Oregon is burdened by a system of excessive distributive Ireient tarins which ia probably without a parallel in the union. In an article published in The Journal an exposition was made of the extraordinary profits of the railroads operating in this state and of the manner in which their books have been juggled so at, to hide these profit) from the pub lic gaze. The sources of these profits is found chiefly in the extortionate freight rates. There are few sections of Oregon which enj iy competition in transporta tion. A comparison of the rates to com petitive points with the rates to non-com-peti ive points affords a striking illustra tion of the manner in which tbe great majority oi the people of the sta'e are burdened. Such a comparison reveals the fact that wherever it has been possi ble to do so the railroads have wrung from shippers at non-competitive points rates to and three times as hitch as charged for similar hau Is made in com petition with other carriers.
