It is reported that San Jose i burning. In San Francisco the people are huddled together in the public squares and parks. City apparently doomed. Why Don't Homeseekers Come To Morrow County? Morrow county produces more wealth p?r cap:ta than any other county in the state of Oregon. Our territory within county lines is a miles in length by aniles in width, large enough for a state, b it with not enough population for a good sized country village. Only .r000 people in the county. Every year we grow about l,0C0,(H)0 bushels of wheat. This is worth about 4700,000. We have about 225.000 head of sheep worth about $502,000, after shearing Lils the wool from these sheep wilt s 11 for 8363,000. Theu there are horses and r.a'.tle worth at least a ha f a million mo e. These aie the main items iu the wealth producers. It don't take much fi-u ing when you look at thee figures to come to the conclusion that Morrow county peop e make some money. We have the soil, the liraite and the goods to make gooJ. Morrow couuty's climate is plea-ant and healthful. Morrow county people aie prosperous. Motow county peop'e have money. Here in the town of Hecpner we have two banks. The F.rst National in publish ed statements si own depo its runnii g from half a mil. ion dollars up. Both banks 4nve a big business. Ueppner can show 1m larze-it bk deposits of any town of ts size in the North est, and it should ba remembered that Lexington, nine miles Away, and I ne, IS miles from Heppner both have banks doing a good business. This looks like Morrow county pe.lrf have money. But look here, almost half ti e population of Morrow county reside in the towns. This leaves only between 3,000 and 4,000 people in a territory 75 miles in length by 35 miles in wealth. Don't you think there is room for more people. Ten or twelve rears ago land in Monow county wtDt begging xt f-om $100 'o 4250 for a quarter section. Five years ago this land had looked up to $6 00 and $7.00 par acre. Today this land is wo th $15 per aae with a few of the choir est 1 la home times bringing 420 per se e. How H e old timers are wo deiii.g why ttiey did not take advantage of this cheap land. They con'd have made a barrel of money. - Over in the adjoining county of Utniti. la wheat lands today a-e worth from $59 to $75 an acre. Ou I he other side of us is Sherman couny d celling from $25 up. Here we ate betweea with ju.-t as good nd land at 15 p here. Our lands are sure to go up in price. I a few years i... , . . , ,c ..... v mi. be strain woi deting why thev did cot buy som- of this $15 land. The pr. p bitiuii is the a ne now as it was a few years agt, but it takes mote monev. Lat yer Htiil year before a number of good fa' m is b m ;ht whe it ianis and paid for i with the fust crop. Come to Morrow county and investigate this land bisiness. Fo lowing are a few gamplts of what we have for sale: water, or abi at three-fourths the mount of wati r stored by tie ooa new Croton dam supplying the City ot New York. Besides the earthwork there win be provided a 200-feet wide concrete nusonry spiil ay, with masonry abutment and training walls; also a concrete masonry gate tower and outlet conduit. "Next in order for advet Using there will follow the 25 mile feed canal, with a capacity of 300 cubic feet per second, to carry the flood waters of the Unia'illa River to the Cold Springs reserv ir. Specifications aud plans for this cat al are under preiaiations, and it is ex pected that bids on this canal and structures upon it will be advertised for before the end of the current month. This work is somewhat delay id b right-of-way complications due to two owners of land refusing to nnme any tetms whatever. The Government can- uot tinder the law pay any but reas onable prices, so that only harm anJ delay can come to the landowners them selves if they persist in their present attitude. "Next in order will be the main iriicration canals leadim the water from the Cold Sunnus dam to the lands, and the comolicated lateral system of ditches and vive lines to property dis- tiibute it to each farm unit. Final surveys for this work are now being pushed rapidly to the end that all work on the project may be completed at me same time.
