At a receDt meeting of the stock holders of the Bank of lone an eight per cent dividend was de clared as a result of the year's business. A. W. Saling, of Eight-Mile, was in the city, Monday. Mr. Saling states that he has 800 acres of red chaff wheat sown and that it is looking well. Hodge W. R. Ellis has an nounced himself as a candidate for concreHS in the NeooDd dis trict. Judge Ellis is conceded to be a very strong man. Lpxington and lone newspapers are qurrelicg over which is the best tovD. Both are good little towns, but there is a whole lot of room for improvement. Geo. Vincent, of Butter creek, was in the city, Saturday. Mr. Vincent recently sold 100 head of fat cattle to tho Union Meat company of Portland. The price WOS-2J cents per hundred, weighed in at Mr. Vincents, witfc four per cent cut for shrinkage. Mr. Vincent who has been feeding his cattle on alfalfa, baa 10 head left, and says there are plenty of buyers. The cattle have been very thrifty this winter aaid are in prime condition. J. If. Blake, of lone, was a Heppner visitor, Tuesday. Emil Schaiff, of Monument, was in the city, yesterday. Tunis Sweek, of Cottonwood, yyas iu tbe city, Friday, J. A. Ed Roed has resigned his posi ion with Gilliam & Bisbee and has Accepted a position with a hardware firm at Pullman, Wash. The ladies of tbe M. The books as yet contain but few names, the. TOters being a little slow about making a start. A. Liiwback, representing the well known piano bouse of Allen & Gilbeit of Portland, is iu the city. Mr. Lineback will have headquarters at the Palace hotel where he will be located for the next two weeks. He is offering some of the greatest bar gains ever known in Heppner on pianos. Call and see him. Peter Brenner, of Eight-Mile, was in the city, Friday. Mr. Brenner state that the acreage in tbe Eight-Mile country this season is large. The acreage of summer fallow sown wheat being between 25 and 50 per cent greater than last year. An encouraging feature is the ftict that the farmers are p ying more attention to better cu tivation and the summerfallow in the Eight-Mile district this season was in better condition when hfown than ever before. The farmers are now buey taking advantage of the fine weather. Winter wheat is looking well and is making a good .growth. The open winter has given grain a chance to become well rooted and th.j connequences are that winter prospects are epcouraging. CASTOR I A Tor Infants and Children. Ayers submitted his report on the disposition of the Lewis and Clark fair fund. Prior to the opening of the Lewis and Clark fair at Portland, owing to the prevailing sentiment in favor of a good showing for Morrow county at the fair by the people of tli is county, the ooubty court appropriated 82,000 to be expended for a booth and for the gathering and installation of an exhibit of our products. At the time, th s ws considered a small snm, especially when com pa:el with other counties, some of the appropriations running as high as $15,000. While this sum was small, Mor row county's fehowing was certain ly creditable and attracted prob ably as much attention as any other county, tkmg everything into consideration. The report submitted by Judge Ayers is v rv complete, showing an itemized statement in detail of every fxpenditure, which makes a showing of wise and careful man figement. In short it whs a whole lot for the money. The report shows a balance of 508.54 which has been returned to Morrow county, making a total cost to the taxpayers of this coun ty the sum of 81491.46. Elocutionary Entertainment. Miss Bertha Matlock will give an elocutionary entertainment at Roberts' bald in this city on Satur day evening, January 19. Mies Matlock will be assisted by home musical talent The entertain ment will be under tbe auspices of tbe ladies guild of the Episcopal church. Miss Matlock needs no infroduo tion to the people of Heppner. She is an elocutionist of rare abil ity and a charming and accomp lished young lady, who can please an audience in any city.
