to the Sister's School at The Dalles.
She is making rapid progress in music.
Jas. Mellaley a prominent sheepman
of Heppner and extensively interested
in Grant county, was in the city yester
day on business. Grant County Newe.
Messrs 1'. M. Howard and A. V. Lun
dell were outgoing passengers on Mon
lav's train for Portland. They will at
tend the annual meeting of the Equitable
Life Association.
Hii am Tash, of Hardman, was in the
city Fiiday. Mr. Tash reports that
there is no snow in the vicinity of Hard
man and Mockmeuarc not feeding much
at. tin' present time.
H. F. Tash of Hardman, started for
Walla Walla, Saturday to resume his
studies at school. He was'.aceompanied
by Clvde, Stanton of Eight Mii a who is
also attending school at Walia Walla.
The match game of basket ball be
tween Minor A Co's team and i'.lake's
team resulted in a victory for Minor &
Co. The gmne was vcy close and was
veiy interesting. Another game will be

are told that C. 0. Curtis sold 17 sections
of;land to Elord & Moore for $34,000,
this week. Mr. Curtis bought the land
three years ago from the raiload com
pany at 40 cents an acte.
J. A. McLaughlin, the mill man from
Gurdane, was in the city, Monday.
Frank Baker and sister who have
been visiting friends in this city, left
Saturday morning for their home at
Colfax.
Mrs. Ruth French left Friday, for Los
Angeles, Calif., to spend the winter.
Miss Mable Ayers and Miss Bethene
Crane left Tuesday morning for Walla
Walla to resume their studies at Whit
man college.
Gilbert Coats has retnrned from an
extended visit to Kansas and Missouri.
His nephew Scott Osborn returned with
him. Mr. Coats reports having had a
pleasant visit but is glad to get back to
Oregon. He has been in Oregon tor
nineteen years. Mr. Coats to the

one hog last week that weighed

The new Odd Fellows temple in this
city was dedicated with imposing and
impressive ceremonies yesterday after
noon. The work showed the result of elab
orate and extensive preparation and the
beautiful ritualistic woik was sucb as to
merit the admiration of all present.
Past Grand Matter K. Alexander pre
sided, and his ready wit and easy com
mand of his duties helped in a marked
degree to facilitate the work.
At the right of the presiding officer
sat Past Grand Master Phil Metscban,
of Portland, a three linker and pioneer
in the order who is too well Known to
need introduction. On the left sat Past
Grand Master James Welch, a well
known Odd Fellow.
Among other prominent Odd Fellows
could be mentioned Senator-elect Wal
ter M. Pierce, Theodore Howard and
Mr. Brown, of Pendleton, and others.

well represented.
Yesterday was Odd Fellow's day in
Heppner, and the town was theirs
There was nothing too good for the
members of this crand order with its
noble teachings and obpctd for the ele
vation of mankind.
The hall was crow ded, about 'JO
ppople being present, and it wa no'icc
able that niot of the people in the large
assembly wore the beautiful einb'em of
three licks.
Acting Grand Master Alexander called
the assembly to order at o'clock. The
exercises were opened with music bv a
select choir, followed by the beautiful
dedicatory ceremonies.
The exereis "s were interspersed with
vocal music and closed with speeches
by distinguished members of the order.
Hon. Wa ter M. Pierce delivered a
most pleasing address with an easy and
free delivery that brought forth great
applause.
The exercises were closed wit n prayer
and it was announced that lunch was
ready at 5 :.'J0.
The big double doors leadiog from the
lodge room to the banquet room were
thrown open, and three tables stretched
from one end of the hall to the other,
with a seating capacity of one hundred,
presented a sight that was most pleas
ing. It is well to state that this magnifi
cent luncheon was prepared and served
by the Rebekabs, and many high com
pliments were paid to the ladies for
their good taste and ability to please.
The lunch was elaborate in both quan
tity and variety, and the good humor
and apparent influence of friendship,
love and truth that permeated the at
mosphere marks an epoch in the htstory
of Odd Fellow ship in Morrow county.
The evening's exercises consisted of
the public installation of the offices, con
ducted by Acting Grand Master Alex
ander, aud passed off very pleasantly.
The officers installed were: Ed.
Ashbangh, N. G. ; Geo. F. Welch, V.
G. ; A. M. Gunn, Sec; M. lJcntenthal,
Trea.
Willow Lodge No. i', ia to be con
gratulated upon its enterprise in build

ized at the. beautiful residance of Mr.
and Mrs. G. W. Phelps, in this city ,
Wednesday morning, at 7 o'clock, or
last week, in the marriage of of Miss
Julia 11. Hart and Dr. M. B. Melzler,
both of tbii city.
The affair was very quiet only the
immediate relatives being present.
The biide was attired in a handsome
gray traveling costume. A beautif:'
tie was worn that had been seut as a
present for the occasion from the Kev.

Warren who was formerly rector of AK
Saints church in thi- city, being a friern'
of the bride.
The groom was dressed in the con
ventional black.
