The total amount ol young fish which will be turned into the Columbia river this year is estimated at about o0,000, 000, of which experts believe that at least one tenth will go to sea, mature and return to the river. James Hart has purchased the interest of H. J. Matlock in the grocery basin loess formerly conducted under the firm name of Matlock A Hart. Mr. Matlock Iihh aold an interest to Kufo Blake. The new tirm will be known as Hart A Blake. At the Oregon insane asylarn new rules have been laid dawn by officials, requiring employes io give their un divided attention to their work. They are Mrs. Bartee and ber child of about 12 years, the cases are reported as se vere ones. W. bookkeeper at the M. C. L. A T. Co s. warehouse departed Saturday morning for San Francisco. From San Francisco he ioe to Oakland, where his wife is stopping. Mr. Lipsett will stay in Cal ifornia for a month before returning to this city. Matlock A Hart, tirocers. A. H. October was a lively month in the I'nited Ststes land office at Walla Walla. One hundred and twenty persons made application for homesteads, covering a total of 1,'1U acres. Mrs. It. F. Hynd, io company with her brother, it. B. Sigebee, of Florida, who has been visiting here for some lime, started Friday morning for Florida. Mrs. Hynd will stay in the South dur ing the winter. Mrs. M. J. Ssling received word that her daughter. Mrs. Msy Warden, of Wasco, wss quite ill, and left Tnesday for that place. From there she will take her daughter to The Dalles hospi tal to be treated. A great many people in Heppner got up Friday morning thoroughly impressed that the night before was Halloween. Young America was out and the usual pranks were played. There was no real damage to property, everything being in the order of good natare. The ring ing of door bells, the moving of gates and the change of location of wagons and other loose articles was the extent of the fun. There was vsry little com plaint. A novel and handsome paper weight consisting of a glass case filled with beautiful shells of different kinds ar ranged in attractive order, was pre sented to the Gazkttk by the Conser A Ayers Drug Co. Marcus Gunn, Nelson Bartholomew, Jimmy In land, Abie Blackmsn. Ches. Kaser was quite seriously hurt Tuesday while working on the new building which is Iwing erected by Mr. Six-urn, on Main street. A scaffold on which he was standing gave wsy and he was precipitated to the ground, a distance of about twelve feet. In the fall his chin struck a timber, cutting an ugly gaab and badly bruising his jaws and faeo. Had he struck a little lower down on the neck, the result would have been much nmre serious. As it is he is tiursing a very sore chin. Fortu nately no bones weie broken. He is now getlieg along nicely under the care Dr. Swinburne. There was a very pleasant party at the residence of Prof, and Mrs. I). V. S. Reed Tursday evening, given by the young peopled the 1'nristiau Kndeavor Society of the Christian church. Mies Anna Hell Hioboii died Wednes day at the Imine ot her mother, Mrs. I. una l'.ith in Pendleton. The cause of ber death was heart trouble from which ehe bas been ill three months. Her death had been expected for sever- davs and it has caused universal sor row in the community. She kin born at the l'alles, Septem ber 7, IMm and came to Pendleton in 171, w here she bas since resided, the w as the daughter of the late B. B. Bish op. Mie leaves a moiner, one nroioer, K. It. Bishop of Heppuer, snd two sis ters, Mrs. J. K. Bean of Pendleton and Mrs. Thorpe Roberts of 1'rosner, Wssh. All are in Pendleton except K. K. Bish op who is at present in California. Follow ing are some of the late rulings that will he of interst to bidders and to the public : No bid submitted will be considered anises tbs bidder shall agree in his bid that in tbe aveat at tbe service being awarded to him he wilt give his person, al supervision to the performance of the aama, and will reside on or contiguous to aba route. Judge Lucian Everts, who bad been quite poorly for some time past, died last Wednesday morning, aged 77 years, 24 days. He was born in Athens countv, Ohio, Oct. 6, 1824. He secured bis education in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he taught school for a few years and studied for his profession, the law. He next tried newspaper work, having at one time edited a paper in Sao Francisco, He was also a Mexican War veteran. Mr. Everts came to this coast in '49 but did not come to Oregon till 1SS4, re siding in Umstilla county most of tbe time, where he practiced law and en gaped in the mercantile business. He was married to Mrs. Everts in Decem ber, lSSo. Mr. Everts twice represent ed his district in the legislature. About eleven years ato he came to Long Creek, wbeie be has resided ever since.
