Mortimer Whitehead, now of Califor nia. but formerly of New Jersey, tells how the grange “ idea” came to take root in France. He remarks that dur ing the grange encampment at tho Philadelphia Centennial expoRition In 1870 the then national master (John T. Jones of Arkansas) placed in his hands the work of translating the ritual of the order into French for the benefit of n Frenchman he had appointed as deputy to carry the grange “ idea" Into France. This French gentleman was a government official sent from France specially to study our agriculture as shown at the exposition. " I performed the duty assigned me, and for a long time after his return to France,” says Mr. Whitehead. “ I kept up a grange correspondence with M. Lamousln.
