V. t t ADIE& M T h a n k s g iv in g F a n ta s tic a ls Novem ber N New York City on Thanksgiving Days it is the custom for boys to associate themselves in small groups, and, wearing masks, usually formed of the grotesque false faces found in the shops and the further addi tion o f suits as ragged and disreputable- looking as possible, to set forth on a begging expedition. They ring door bells and silently hold forth their hands in expectation of what they may receive. This may be a penny or other small coin, an apple, bun, nuts, or what ever the donor may choose to give. In some neighborhoods the custom becomes a nuisance on account o f boys who range extensive districts in purely mercenary spirit, but where the original custom is kept of merely canvassing their home neighborhood, it is not unpleasing. The money collected, as well as the eatables, go to make a supplementary feast for the youthful foragers, though where they find room to stow it after the regulation Thanksgiving dinner is hard to under stand. In the outlying districts, where vacant lots are still to be found, it is a custom to make fires and roast potatoes, which the young rascals who have just come from a turkey dinner sit down and cat as if they never bc^pre had eaten in their lives. It is probable that the custom originated in colonial times and that the first dis guises were those of Indians. Any kind of grotesque now serves and the variety of disguise is endless. H E ancient year began with March, so that November was the ninth month. The name comes from Latin novem, nine. When Julius Caesar reformed the calendar to make the year begin with January, November, of course, became the eleventh month. Originally it had thirty-one days, as had all the odd months. When the Roman senate, with an excess of servility, named Aug ust after Emperor Augustus, they could not bear that so great an emperor should have so short a month. Therefore they changed it to thirty-one days and then changed all the remaining months of the year, so that the alternation should be restored as nearly as possible. And that is why every school boy must learn that “ Thirty days hath November.” I T W here there are only a few cabbages they may be kept for some time by placing them head down in a trench with the roots just above the ground. When the weather grows cold, the roots may be covered with soil or litter. 10 P O S T CARDS ABSOLUTELY FREE T o a n y p erson w r it in g in g ooil fa ith w e w ill 10 s a m p le* o f o n r fin e p ost r a n is F R K E to g e t h e r w ith in fo r m s tio n a* to h ow to g et m o re c a rd * W ith ou t coat l.jr a c t in g a* o u r a g e n t.
