T O n i A . 11» lini Y cr Hm (MUTS A fc*ioux C ity man named Martin A. Peterson Is the Inventor «if a propelling mechanism for steamships which ho believes w ill revolutionize navigation. It is a contrivance whereby ocean ste;:inert may attain the speed o f rail roa»J trains. It saves a tir s e part o f the energy wasted by the screw pro peller, and it w ill largely do aw ay with the rolling o f a vessel in a »torus. These are the claims made for his in vention by Mr. Peterson. T h e most remarkable feature uhout Mr. Peterson’s Invention is Its sim plicity. The action o f his propelling mechanism is very similar to that one might imagine In a webfooted horse iw lm m ln g at a trot. F ive paddles are arranged on each side o f the vessel. The forward tw o on one side and the rear three on the opposite side act simultaneously In the same direction. W hen five o f the paddles are In this manner making a push on the water, the other five are com ing hack pre paratory to making a push. ICacb o f these puddles is us exact a reproduction o f a duck’s foot as It is possible to make o f steel, and the ac tion is very similar. Indeed, the idea was suggested to Mr. Peterson by his observation o f a duck swimming. l i e noticed that when the duck made a stroke the web was expanded and struck the water with great force; that when the foot was brought hack for another stroke the web was closed, so that It cut the w ater with the mini mum o f resistance, and that In propel ling Itself It used practically none of the water a second time. A ll o f these features he has embodied In his device. Mails by STANDARD OIL CO. The teacher of an intermediate (trade in the Third Ward school was “ showing off” her pupils before a number of visitors. The spelling class was on the floor and one smull, redheaded boy was given the word “ introduction.” He paused, twisted his lips, stared, and then in a faltering way spelled it correctly, and seemed rather surprised that he had done it. “ Do you know what the word means ? ” asked the teacher. “ N'o’m.” “ What? You don’t know what introduction means? “ X o’m.” “ Well, now, I ’ll explain it to you. Does your mother ever have call ers ?” * “ Yes’m !” “ Well, now, suppose that two Indies came to call on your mother. Your mother knows one of the ladies, but doesn’t know the other. She has never seen the lady and doesn’t even know her name. Now. how would she become acquainted with this lady and find out her name?” “ She’d send me out for a can of beer.” As that was the correct answer the teacher had nothing further to say.— Milwaukee Sentinel.
