As time rolls on Admiral Schley be comes a bigger min in the eyes of the nation, while Sam|>son and his friends who have tried to belittle Schley have become small potatoes in public esti mation. There is soon lo be a greatly reduc ed rate for eastern settlers coming to this coast and the common point rate to all points in Oregen will be the same as to Portland. The result will be that many wlft would otherwise come no farther than Portland wi.l scatter all ever this valley. The Uuion Pacific rrilroad will this year spend nbout 130,000,000 in im provements and extensions west of Salt Lake city. They expect an im mense oriedtal trade and are prepar ing to handle it. After a carerul investigation the Salem Journal has found out the an nual expense of the governor's office is $<>1)50, that of the stats treasu rer is $8212, superintendent of schools, $7827 secretary of state, $22,352, stale prin ter and binder, $45,989, a total of $91, 330. Much of the above comes in the shape of fees and perquisites and is in every case above a reasonalle amount. If each of said officers were placed on a fair fixed salary and all fees turned into the slate treasury, there would be a big saving and a re duction of burdensome taxation. Tlie spirit of winter is with us, ma- kirg its presence known in many dif ferent ways, sometimes by cherry sun shine and glistening snows, and some times by driving winds and blinding storms. To many people it seems to taka a delight in making bad things worse, for rheumatism twists harder, twinges sharper, catarrh becomes mure annoying, and the many sym ptoms of scrofula are developed and aggravated. There is not mneh poet ry iu this, but there is truth, and it is a wonder that more people do not get rid of these ailments. The medicine that cures them, Hood's Sarsaparilla, it easily obtained and there is abund ant proof that its cures are radical and permanent. E.
