After a carerul investigation the
Salem Journal has found out the an
nual expense of the governor's office
is $<>1)50, that of the stats treasu rer is
$8212, superintendent of schools, $7827
secretary of state, $22,352, stale prin
ter and binder, $45,989, a total of $91,
330. Much of the above comes in the
shape of fees and perquisites and is
in every case above a reasonalle
amount. If each of said officers were
placed on a fair fixed salary and all
fees turned into the slate treasury,
there would be a big saving and a re
duction of burdensome taxation. Let
the matter be agitated in every neigh
borhood and onr lawmakers be re
quired to change so unjust a state of
things.

for 1901 it was ordered that the state
levy be fixed at 7$ mills, school 5.conn
ty 10} and the road 3 mills, making a
total of 20 mills, the same as last year.
Mr. Riggs dissented from the amount
of road levy. The appointment of a
road superintendent was continued.
