ft It. THURSDAY, DEC. 3. 1891. PARK PICKINGS. November SO, 1931. Good time tp plow, but all uro off courting. V ' There is eotnrV'appetmiiicc of falling weather now. $ Fine weather ?3r tho time of year. No snow in sight. Uncle Van fell sosie time ago and hurt his hip, but is Around again. It seems that Union county is turn ing ouCii fine crop of convicts this time. Jo Van is nt Union very sick, a blood vc9sel having burated on liib brain. Matt is not a widow any more. His wife has come back and he is happy again. The loggers arc getting logs at the mill. It is getting quite soft for tho business now. Archie Vanorder and wife arc stop ping on Jo Van's place, taking caro of the stock while Jo is away. Uncle John Vanorder was called to court as a juror, and is quite sick bo tho word comes to the Park. Tho stage company law made a station at It. M. South's again. Tho drivers lay over night there. - Grandma South has been ick and v' -near diith's door, but is gutting along JeryAvcil now, considering her age. . South still keeps bach at tho same old stand, and the women oome along the road and say "why don't youget married," to tantalizo him; but he says "bachelor's hull, I protest, ie best." No wife for to scold, No children for to bawl? Happy is the man Who keeps bachelors hall. 'And there went fortk a wind from tho Lord, and brought quails from Uio sea, and let them fall by the camp as it were a days jonmcy on this Bide and as it wero u days journey on the other side, round about tho camp, and as it were two cubits upon tho face of the earth. And tho peoplo stood up all that day and all that night, and all the next day, and thoy gathered the quails. He that gathered least gathered ten bomcrs; and they spread them all abroad for themselves round about the camp. And while tho flesh was yet between their teeth, ore it was chewed, against tho people. And tho Lord tmoto tho peoplo with a very great plague." Numbers 11: 31-33. Sup- , . i poso wo mako some calculations as to ! tllO number Of quails brought from tho sea to the children of Israel. There never! lias been this number ol quails alto gether on the earth in six thousand yearn. According to Moaw there wero HX),000 people in camp, but tomo commentators think there wero not more tl.au 10,000. However, we will . - fukotho numtwr ulvrn by Moc-. Then again, how could the people move around or do any thing with the quails three feet deep at evcrv step? And just think how many would be smothered to death and die for want of water and food. Why, the de.id ones would create such a stench that no human being could live within miles of the place, let alone in the midst of them. It says Un people stood up two days ami a night. Can anyone believe that all those peo ple stood up for sixty hours? Now if you will look in tho tho same chapter you will see that the children of Israel were complaining to Moses of what a good time they had when they were in Egypt, and what u bad time they were having in that desert land. Then it goes on to state that Moses promised them that he would call on God and see what could bo done for them. Well, Moses did call on God, and lie came down and they had a talk, and God promised the people meat. That was the food they wished for, and God said to the people, you shall have meat. You shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor fivo days, neither ten days, nor twenty days, but even a whole mouth, until it comes out at your nostrils. Now does he fulfill his promise to tho people? And it says the least anyone gathered was ten homers. Now a homer is a little over eleven bushels, so that th poorest worker gathered one bundled and ten bushel-. Suppose we say they aver aged fifteen homers, that would be 330,000,000 bushels of quail they all gathered. And it mys they, spread them abroad. Now wheto did they bprmil liieni, beeing that sixty miles in diameter was covered three feet deep with quails. It appears that the Lord treated these people with cruelly en tirely the epposilo of wisdom, good ness and power the attribute- ( f a creator for after all their hard work gathering the quails, cleaning, etc., and while the llesh was Wtwcvn thur teeth, tho Lord got mud at tin iii and smote them with a viry reut j-lu-u -and thotu-ands oi them ded and llifV never knew what for.
