i THE ARIZONA KICKER. The Editorial Hardens Which a Onlua of the Preas Una to Hear Gracefully. We extract the following Items from the last Issue of The Arizona Kicker: They Will K.vow More. A combina tion, calling itself tho Acme Opera company of Chicago, gave a show of some sort at Reynold's hall last Friday night. No free tickets were sent to this oillce, and when wo ent our half breed roller boy over to tho manager with a noto asking him why in Texas he had neglected such an important duty, ho returned won! that The Kicker could kick and bo hanged to it. Wo thero foro kicked. Wo hired Cooper's hall for the nuuo night, gave a free dance, and tho Acme Upera company opened to an audience com posed of tlie landlord's cross eyed boy and two old half breeds who thought homebody was going to bo scalped. There's nothing mean about us. We sim ply want what is due to the profession, nnd what has been granted it from time imme morial. When an uiuus-einent combination bets out to ignore us and make us sing small, somebody will certainly hear something drop berore getting to the top of tho hilL Not Saving a Worm. Many of our sub scribors are asking w hy The Kicker has noth ing to say in tavor of either of tho local tick ets now in the Held. Thero are two reasons. First, beeaus.0 we wero not nominated on either ticket, ami, soundly, becauso a bigger gang of rascals were never up lor otllce. Wo wanted to run for mayor. It is no umj being over modest ubout such things. Wo are bet ter titted for tho oition than any other man in town. Tho ollleu should novo been glad to seek us. It didn't do so, und to we sought it. Woshould havo lllleil tho osition with crodit to all, but tho gangs wanted a tool, and so they nominated Doc llurrous and Hank Jones to head tho two tickets. Neither of these men will ever serve. Within onu month we will havo both of them back nt Joliet to serve out their unexpired sentences. Wo havo been warned that wo must come out and support emu ticket or the other, or go to tho wall. Begin your wall business, gen tlemen, as soon as you please. When you down us you havo got to lieat a grand aggre gation of newspaper, grocery, feed store, harness shop, butcher shop and knitting fac tory, all under one roof, presided over by one head, and each doing a line business. Not Just Ykt. Tho Tom Cat Silver .Mining company sent us n certilleate of stock of tho face value of S.VW last week and asked us to editorially mention the fac that the mine would prove one of the greatest bonan zas of the age tor investors. We can't con wientiously do it yet. We want to wait awhile and see whether wo nro to be assessed on the stock or not, ami we'd like to hear of somoonewho has received a dividend. We ..c.1.1 n . ..I-.. ..LiiM... I I . i i.t .ill.nt. ef,w.1. came along, and pull' up their old swindles without stint, but wo havu made a change of base in this i-ojieet Wo found that a com pany which would boat tho public would also beat us. They Took Kxckption. Tall Hill, of the Gem Saloon, Ohio George, of tho Arcade Poker Rooms, and Ixively Jim, of tho lied Front Sink of Iniquity, tool: exception to our kindly i einnrk in lust week's issue that whisky and poker were trying to run tho town, nnd they laid for us accordingly. On Friday af ternoon we were examining tho curcass of a big jackass rabbit killed over in the gulch by Sam Andrews, and on exhibition in front of Davises' butcher shop, when tho three worth ies ubove nnmed approached and signified their intention of cooking our goose. Wo had them covered by our gun in flvo seconds, and we held them in line with hands up for full five minutes as an exhibition. When they had been disarmed we allowed them to sneak away. We don't claim to own this town, nnd wo never bet out to run it, but we propose to talk in plain English on all subjects and guard the public interests to tho best of our ability. If tho three parties named do not subside ut once, we shall encourage n crowd to turn out with n rope some frosty evening and pull their heads chock up against a limb. He Still Lives. A Nebraska subscriber writes to inquire if there is any other weekly published in this burg. Thero Ls. Wo havo a chattel mortgage on everything but tho red headed, cross eyed, lop shouldered coyote who edits it, and can close him up at any minute; but wo let him run on in order to keep him off tho town. Wo rnther like his audacity as well He prints lbO copies, none of which can lie read on account of tho oor press work, and yet ho claims the largest cir culation in tho kuown world. Ho knows we own tho very chair ho sits in, but yet ho de votes four columns each week to abusing us personally. Yes, he still lives, poor old unfortunate. But wo aro going to give him ropo for tho winter. If ho was liounced out he might have to run for the legislature. Detroit Free Press. , Ait Kxrly KUcr. "Pat, you must be nn early riser. Run UiMin In the Street of Sun Frnu claco hy nn Did Acquaintance. "Stop hlinl Stop him! He's a tnurdcrerl" Such a frantic cry as this naturally raised an excitement on the borderof Chinatown, San Franclco, where it wits heard tho other day. And the sight presented was even more startling an agile, long legged young man dashing toward the darkest corner of Chinatown with an old man hi pursuit, yelling as if he would raise tho city. Of course, scores of men joined in the pursuit, and at length two police men caught tho fugitive in tho rear of n restau rant, through which he had run. The old man came up, and between his pantiiigs de clared that he had "steered" tho fu gitive all around that section, look ing in vain for n policeman " You PKTHR SCIIXKIDKIL never can find 'em when you want 'em, nnd so I tried to arrest him myself," He then related this strange story: He gave his name its Patrick Spain, late sergeant of Troop L. Fifth United States cavalry, hut retired lately by reason of his age. In the spring of ItSSX) I'eter Schneider was a privato in that company nnd Al Candy was the blacksmith. One night the men had some linuur In a ravine near Fort Sill, 1. T., where they were located, and in his jovial way Candy perpetrated some tri fling joke on Schneider. The latter drew a murderous knife, wounded one man badly nnd literally cut in two the heart of the un fortunate Candy. Realizing the enormity of his crime Schneider mounted his horse and escaped into the wilderness, nor could all the diligence of the military llnd him. A few weeks ago the old sergeant en countered liijn i" Los Angeles, but he es caped. This time the sergeant, determined to have him and lie did. Schneider admits everything and tells n strange story of his wanderings, but claims that Candy was aiming at him with nu iron bar when killed. He was delivered to the military authorities to be taken to Fort Sill. DOWN WENT TOMMY. A Youthful ("Inrliiiiiitl Di-ipci-acln Shot hy an Otllo-r. Cincinnati has "unearthed" a gang of boy burglars. Johnny Hester, aged twelve; Waller Hidden, eleven; Iawrence Judd, thirteen; Robert I'ollock, twelve; Charlio Doran, nineteen, and Tommy Finn, eight een, have been arrested, and Tommy has a bullet in his groin which will retire him for several weeks if it does not end his earthly career. It is a queer story. For some time these boys and two others, "Hluck" Ross (a negro) and George Carroll, have been observed to congregate on Ritteuliouso TOMMY I'lN'N' IN TIIK HOSPITAL. street, near Kossuth, at night, and many petty crimes have been traced very close to them. At length Charlio Doran yas ar rested and two policemen sturted to look for Tommy Finn. Ho saw Patrolman Hatters Hearing him and ran through an nlley, but as the officer gained on him he drewaifci-callber ruvolverand fired. Prompt ns an echo came n shot from Ollicer Hat ters' 3S-callber "gun," and down went Tommy with a bullet in his groin. At the hospital he talked like a small edition of Dick Turpin, Jack She) herd and "Hilly the Kid" all in one, "guyed" the police and told amazing stories of how he had circumvented them by in genious dodges, hut just the same denied having committed any crime in Cincinnati. It soon transpired that he had shot at his own "pal," Doran, and carved a neat furrow In the latter s scalp. An odd featureof tho ca,se Is that all these boys are of respecta ble and honest parentage. The Itlooil Stumped Path of Iro;rea. Wlieneer mini attempt to improve on nature, nature nearly always demands nu appeasing sacrifice of human life. Hardly a great building has gone up, a huge bridge spanned a river or a Hue of trans portation completed where the cement has not been mixed with human blood. A cable railway is lieing laid on Hroadway, New i ork, and the section bosses are hav ing a good deal of trouble in keeping peo ple away from the-Inclosure along the line, iuirly the other afternoon a man was standing leaning over the inclosure watching the men at work between Hector street nnd Exchange place. Ho hud been told several times to get away, that the cars coming along might run over him, but he wits buund to stay right where he was. In a few minutes n Hroadway car came along. He tried to cross the track, but just as he turned around the car was upon him. He was caught between the inclosure and the inside of the car and fearfully crushed. The boards bad to be torn oil so he could be released. He was taken Into UT Hroadway and placed on a lounge in nn unconscious state. In nbout tea minute he regained suf ficient consciousness to tell the officers that bis name was Cohen. He was badly bruised about the abdo men ami limbs and received internal in jur! tn. He was taken to Chambers Street hospital in a precarious condition. A lirisuiid' Lone l'lin Whmriit. Three score years 111 prison! It is rare indeed that a criminal survives that length of coufiuement. The latest in stance is that of a former brigand chief, Dotnenlco Noccliia. who was released from the Naples prWou recently after having beeu shut up for sixty years. He is now eighty-three. Several gentlemen iumiired about her at the otllce. i some few left their cards and one she met , and talked with in the ladies' parlor. Finally her brother, George F. Flack, called and went directly to her room, nnd as near ns can bo determined this precipitated the trouble. Shu and her brother declare that Clerk Lclaud entered the room in a rude and in solent manner and peremptorily ordered her to lenvo the house at once. There was n painful scene. The lady was overconio with shame ami confusion, and other guests of the house got a little excited. The managers were appealed to and grant ed Miss Sterling permission to remain. Nevertheless they stand by theclerk in tho suit. She makes the complaint of slander, etc., anil puts the damages at $30,000. A Fortune Itejond Iter Heiteh. Many are the strange conditions set down In wills by eccentric testators. It is be cause she cannot comply with certain re quisites that .Mrs. Laura Fulton, aged thirty, of Atchison, Kan., is unable to grasp n fortune. She is separated from Mr. John C. Fulton, who is her second husband. She wns first married to Horace H. HaiTcmlcu, who died eight years ago. Ho had a wealthy uncle named John A. Watson, a bachelor, who resided in Loudon. This uncle who was nearly eighty years old, died in January, 1SST, leaving his nephew's widow tr,000 in cask and 10,000 In pro duct ivo real estate. Under one of tho con ditions of the will, however, she has as yet been unable to get the inheritance. This condition is that she shall be married to nu honorable man and live with him at least one year. In case of failure to carry out this part of the will within seven years after the death of the testator the property goes to Trinity church, London. The marriage of Mrs. HalTemlen and Mr. Fulton occurred about a year after the death of Watson, lut they lived together only a few mouths. In order to obtain possession of the little fort line Mrs. Ful ton will have to get a divorce from her present husband and then marry somu other man and live with him according to the provisions of her uncle's will. Mrs. Fulton's attorney has a certified copy of Watson's will. He says that she can come into full control of her portion of the es tate in less than three months after the conditions have been complied with. A Shock Tor the Ilnlnter. The detective is made the subject of all sorts of stories heroic, romantic, despic able and ludicious. A ueutlemau wrltliii ! to a Loudon paper says that as he entered a railway carnage the other day lie recog nized in the compartment a well known detective. Presently a minister got In, und, with the three locked in by the guard, tho train started. The detectivu was in pursuit of a criminal who had gone by a previous train. Ho began to study tho photograph of the fugitive and, of course, was soon absorbed in it. This attracted the attention of the minister, who present ly observed, "You have, perchance, lost n dear frieniD" "Dearf yes, very dear, in deed," answered the detective. "Take comfort, brother, he has but gone before," continued thu minister, who was not a little shocked when he got for a reply: "Yes, hang him, and got three hours' start of me. Hut I'll follow him, if it's to Jeru salem." "Why Don't You Advertlne?" "Shurp practice" is a thing which the courts of England seem to hold in great disfavor. Some time ago a Captain Kit- I toe, of London, was offered i."J00 by Miss J Drew if he would find u Mr. Ewing, whom she had lost sight of ami wanted to marry. He advertised and got news immediately, I but Miss Drew refused to pay and he sued. The court decided that au honest man would have simply said, "Why don't you advertise?" And inasmuch as he failed to give this simple suggestion he was guilty of imposition. The Downfall of Kdwurd Xolund. Edward T.
