Crop-Weather Bulletin, No. 24. THURSDAY, AUGUST 27. 1891. A FIGHT FOR LIFE. Shall Wo Drive Slow Folion From Our Breakfast Table? Alum and Am monia In our Broad. A nuisance that troubled England fifty years ago is now rapidly spread ing in this country, that is putting Alum in the bread we cat. This ques tion is causing a great deal of discus sion at tlio present moment, as it is rovcaled that alum is being used ag a subatituto for cream of tarter in bak ing powders. A story is told th.t a vory largo percentage of tho baking powdors bold on tho market contain either alum or ammonia, and many of them contain both these pernicious drugs. Much timely alarm is felt at tho wholesalo uso of alum in bread, biscuit and pastry. To young child ren, growing girls, persons of weakly framo, alum bread eaten morning, noon and evening is tho most harmful. It is (ho small quantities taken at every meal that do tho mischief. Alum is cheap, costing but two or threo cents a pound while cream of tarter costs 30c, and the high prico of cream of tarter has led cheap baking powder to bo niado of alum. If tho reader wants to know something of tho corrosive qualities of alum let him touch a piocotohis tonguo then reflect how it acts on tho tonder delicato coalM of the stomach. Dr. Price's Cream Baking Powder is reported by nil authorities as free from Ammonia, Alum, Lime or any oilier adulterant. In fact, tho purity of this ideal powder has never been questioned. Tho observer of tho Oregon Weather Bureau, of Portland, Oregon, has is sued the bulletin for tho week ending Saturday, Aug. 22, 1891, tho same be ing based upon reports received from 1-17 correspondents., which is as WKSTKKN OREGON. Weather. Kain fell on tho night of tho 17th and on tho 18th, throughout this section, in amount from .10 to .20 of an inch, except in Josephine and Jackson counties whero only a few drops fell. Tho temperature was be low tho average in tho fore part of the week, but rose rapidly towards the closo until today when it was from 90 to 100 degrees, except along the coast. Crops. Tho rain did no damage to tho grain, but delayed harvesting and threshing for one day. There was somo slight benefit in the rain to corn and vegetables. Winter wheat is all cut and most of it threshed ; spring grain is being cut. Some smut exists in Douglas and Jackson counties. Grain is yielding better than was ex pected in every county: 50 bushels per acre from a 10 acre field is report ed fron Yamhill county; in Polk county tho wheat generally averaged ovor 30 bushels per acre ; most coun ties have an average yield of from 25 to US bushels per acre. The wooly aphis is doing damage to orchards in Yamhill county. Tho onion crop was injured by lice in Washington county, but as tho acreage was incroasod, the total crop will be above the average. Hop growers expect to now gather a very fair averago crop. In Douglas, Jackson and Gurry counties the first crop of figs is ovor and tho second crop is now setting. Tho early peaches are about over and tho second crop will bo ripe next week; several car leads a day are being shipped from Jackson county. Josephine county is shipping 3 car loads a day of watermelons. Fruit drying is in progress. EASTERN OKEOON. Weather. Haiti fell in most coun ties on tho 19th and 20th, varying from a sprnklo to .11 of an inch. Tho temperature has been above the aver age and rose, towards the close of the week, until today it, ranged from 90 to 100 degrees. Crops. There was no damage done by tho rain, but harvesting operations were delayed for about ono-half a day in various localities. Winter wheat is generally all threshed, and consider able of the spring sown grain has alt-o been threshed, except east of and south of the Blue mountains. All re ports indicate I lie yiold to bo above tho expectations of tho farmers, except in parts of Wasco county, whero tho hot weather in July did some damage. In Union county rust is observable. In this county harvesting operations aro just beginning, in otiurnian Morrow and Umatilla counties yields of from 30 to -10 bushels an aero are commonly ropoitod. Fruit and inel ons are plentiful and large .shipments aro daily made. Wheat prices have an upward tendency and except con traded wheat, few farmers are selling H. S. PAtiUE, Observer, U. S.
