Carroll's Travels ami Experiences. ! SUNDAY SCHOOL CONVENTION. Return of an Old Pioaeer A Serious Acci dent Near flummorvllle Cat tle Bafily Injured. W. T. Carroll and family returned home j lat Thursday after a pleasant and extend ! od tour through Oregon. California. Wash ington and British Columbia. Mr. Carroll left this city on June 1st last, stopping first at Portland whore he remained a few days in the metroHlis, after which he vMtel the prineitml towns in tho Willamette valley. He remained for some time vKitlug rela tives in Harnsburg and Brownsville, lie then made a tour of California, going us far south as Los Angeles, stopping for a short time at all the principal towns on the way, but remained most of tho time at Cambria where he has relatives. The main object of Mr. Carroll's vlit to California was for the benefit of his wife's health, she beliu mulct ed, with weak eyes. While there slu was under the treatment, for six weeks in San Francisco, of one of the best ocuKsN on the Pacific coast, and. we are pleased to state, that she is much Improved inhe.ihli. Dur ing their visit Mr. Carroll and family im proved every opportunity to "take in" the sights and enjoy the many luxuries of the Golden State. Among other plea -ures they took an ocean voyage along the co.ist from Port Hartford to San Pedro. They also ''gathered shells from the sea shore,'' as It were, and brought hmue a fine collection. After finishing their visit in California they started northward and ''isited all the towns in Western Washington ami British Colum bia, including Nanaimo. where Mr. Carroll has a sister living, after which they re turned home, being glad to meet their many friends in Union one more, and were tlie recipients of a hearty welcome from all who know them. California, tak en as a whole, Mr. Carroll thinks it a great state, and affords many luxurie, hut that there are several places in Oregon with much better combined surroundings ami facilities for the enjoyment of life than can bo found in a majority of towns throughout California, The society, for instance, being more preferablo here. As to agricultural lands Mr. Carroll informs us he saw none better than in Grande Hondo valley, and thinks our farmers aro better oil than in many places he has visited. Mr. Carroll has great faith in Union, and thinks an op portunity now presents Itself, which, if properly met, will greatly tend to the up building of our little cit .'. The sixth annual convention of the Ore gon State Sunday School Association will be held in the Cumberland Presbyterian church, Eugene City, commencing Tuesday ovening, May 19th, and closing the follow ing Thursday evening. This is a mass con vention, and all interested in the Sunday school work aro invited to bo present. Ev ery Sunday school in the state is urged to sec that one or more persons are present to represent their school. Arrangements will bo made for the usual reduced fares on the railroads, and also to have a number of leading Sunday school workers present. A programme of topics to be discussed at tho convention can be had by addressing E. W. Allen, Portland, Oregon. Once again it is the pleasant duty of the Democrat to chronicle the return to Baker City o: an old pioneer of the county after an absence of several years. To the sur priseof all his old-time friends Joseph II. Sliinn, brother of tho late Jamos II. Shiiin, alighted from the cast bound train yester day afternoon and since his arrival has been kept busy shaking hands with old-tlmo friends. In 18GfJ Mr. Shinn was elected clerk of Bakcrcounty and in 18GS was re elected. After his term of office expired ho remained hero until SS7ft when he went to La Grande as receiver of tho land olllce. Later he moved to Union and in 1881 went to California whero ho has since resided. 1 lo returns after an absence of ten years and seos many change, tho greatest of which is the absence of old friouds who havo passed to the Great Beyond. However, many yet remain to grasp him cordially by tho hand and talk of the good old days, and it brings back many reminisconeos of tho past. Ba koi Democrat. A Suinmorvillo correspondent to the El gin Recorder says : .serious accident oc curred four miles northwest of Summerville at the residence of J. Fiuehor on March 8. Tho parents went out visiting leaving the children at home; the oldest girl while at work around tho stove set lire to her dress and observing it told her brother to throw water oh her. He, being excited, seized some hot water oil tho stove and threw it on her burning her seriously. Tho fire was put out by tho children but not until the child was burned badly. She is still alive but in a dangerous condition, Two carloads of cattlo recently shipped to Portland from Eagle valley were tun off tho scalos in the terminal yards near the Nor thern Pacific freight dopot Tuosduy night of last week. Ono carload belonged to Ben Long ley and the other to II. S. McGowan. Tho car with Longley's cattle was tipped oyer to such an angle that the cattle were all thrown together in Ono end and many of them wereeonsiderably bruised and injured, The poor bea?U wero left In this position until half past seven o'clock the following morning, when the huinano officer insisted Uiat tltoy be put out of their mUory as soon as poaelble. The avoidant was largely due to careloMiieii. The New Ceusu3. The census has at latt Umii com plot oil. hlcago i now the econd city in the Un ion In MiOshu had but KB.000, Only ten yean, shows C'liirugu Willi IJUQifiOO, a Kl .,1 over half a million, while Philadelphia ha- 1,010.000 a gain of but -J00,00. It looks now as though New York would soon be playing second fiddle to Chicago as well In 1SS0 New York had 1.200,000 and now she has 1,513.000, or a gain of a little out !0,000. The South is also shown to be wakingup. Atlanta with 31,000 in 1SS0 now has (15,500 nearly doubling her former pop ulation. Birmingham. Ala., with less than 10,000 in 1850, now has 2S,000. San Fran cisco's increase ha been a little disappoint ing, but she has passed Cincinnattl in the race in a )iandome manner and is now .Sh, pretty fur behind Baltimore with her 113, 000. The Atlas publishers will reap n harvest this year, as the census statistics and new maps, etc., causes an immense boom in the business, We take the above figures from the Standard Atlas of the World, which will in all probability sell by thousands, as it is one of the most complete and accurate works of the kind we have ever seen. It Is safe to say that the first agent in the field will fairly coin money, as wo all want the new census statistics and the new fea tures in this Atlas which commends it to overyliody. The History Company of San Francisco, tho well known publishers, con trol the coast rights. They want agents and we call attention to their advertisement in another column. 3-,Jt-lw A FEW CURES Tilado byJoy'.s VcgotubluSarsaparlUa Mrs. lleliluu, nn aged aud feeble lady at 510 Mason St., S-nn Francisco, after Rolnndowu stead ily for months wns completely restored hqi!
