The facts arc it ?h n " mistake" if ever tells tin truth about THItH AND NOW. Miuwmm.lliiLEijjmijJWHnOT.iA;jjijjj-jii.ri a "vvoiti) to Til. convention. llcforo another ifMic of Tin: fcVorr is laid before, the people the county dcmocarlic convention will hnvo met and placed in nomination a county ticket to bo voted for in .June, fcclectod a central committee to look after the intercuts of the party for the next two years and eloctcd delegates to repre sent the democracy of Union county in the ulate convention. Never before in the history of the party, in Union county, Iiiih so .much depended upon the wise .and disercto action of its representatives in convention inborn bled as will devolve upon that con vention, not iiiono in tlio interest of the parly but of the whole pcojilo, as matters of muck importance to their welfare, in local affairs, will be- con tingent upon the action of that body. Tho republican convention was evi dently manipulated by a few hehein crs for their own scWhh ends and not i tho interests of the people, and anything. When it Males that "any whobo minds aro not stooped in stupid ity and whose judgement is unpre judiced will Ik; forced to acknowledge that the Union county court house is a dilapidated piece of architecture, was never a nafe building in the lirnt j place" its editors know that they arc wilfully and maliciously uttering and When the wire pullers of La (Jrande wore circulating their petition to the legislature for the purpose of the pass age of tlio enabbling act for a vole on tho relocation of tho county teat they promised the pcoplo thai in tho event of the enabling act being passed and tlio vote of the people moving the county seat to La -Grande, the resi dents of that place would put up the necessary county buildings and bear tho expense of removal. This promise caused many to sign that petition who othenviso would not have done so. I I fere is what the Gazette taid about that time. Wo quote from an editoiinl IMP publishing an unmitigalcd falsehood. ) in while pome of tho men that were placed in nomination nro trustworthy, competent and above reproach, many of the others are not, and while the selection fchould liavo been judiciously mado from tho various portions of the county," the reverse of this was the ease. Tho democrats should wisely take ad vantage of tho mistakes made by their opponents, and by a fair and equitable distribution of the offices .through the various sections of the cou:ily" and by a judiciousselce.tion of honest fair-minded men to till them, place beforo tho pcoplo a ticket that will bo victorious in Juno. To com pass such a result much will depend upon ino men who compose tlio va rious delegations. It is too often tho case thai these delegations arc mostly composed of men chronic office seek ers who by manipulation have got themselves elected as delegates for the solo purposo of advancing their own chances for oflico and who caro noth ing for tho intorcsts of tho party or people so long as thoy can mako their own sefiish schemes succeed. What can bo expected of a convention com posed of such conflicting factions? Wo know nothing about tho plans or purposes of any of tho delegates that will meet in convention next Mon day, lnit Tin: Saoirr has no hesitanoy in saying that tho people of Union liavo but ono candidate they wish to plaeo in tho field, and that is Union itself as a candidate for tho county seat. Wo aro in hopes that no resi dent of Union will put himself for ward, or accept tho nomination for any olllco unless it is by tho desire of a largo majority of tho convention un solicited by him. Thoro is ono man in this city however, whom, if tho con vention sees lit to noininato for tho oflico of clerk, recorder or shei ifl", will reciovo a rousing support, not only by tho people of Union but of tho ontiro county. Wu alludo to Mr. John Klliott. Tho nomination for treasurer will naturally fall to sonio ono residing at tho county scat, but it is an ollico of minor importance. Tho samo things that tend to disorganize a coun ty convention will work tho samo way in tho stato convention. .If delegates aro sent thoro who aro olllco seekers tliotnsolvos, ready to mako any com bination or trado for their own agran disment, rogardlesss of everything else, what kind of a state tickot may bo ex pected? Tho only proper course to pursue is for tho precincts to sond men who aro not a.piring to any oflico as dolegalcs to the county convention and for tho county covention to send the samo kind of men to the state convention. Tin: Scout may bo counted solid for tho national demo ornoy and for tho county democracy if honest and competent men are placed in nomination. "ON I! 111(1 .MlSTAIti:." They know as well as tho jtople of Union that the court bouse is not dilapidated and that it in just as safe a building as there is in the county. Again they know that no one" of the circuit Judges ever refused to hold court in it, and when they assort that one half of the western wall caved in about six years ago and was rebuilt they konvv they are asserting a false hood known by every resident of Union. Why do they make thoo assertions? Has the habit of nlisre- picsenting Union and its county seat grown upon them to that extent that they can't tell the truth without apolo gizing for it? Tho Gizette further asserts that "there is not a particle of doubt that if Union is successful in tho county scat question, one of the first things that will greet the cars of tho beloved tax payers will be the cry for a new court house." Where did this imaginary i cry for a new court house originate?! J JSot in union, for no ono has ever heard any responsible citizen of Union even intimate such n thing. Tho idea originated in tho brain of the editor of the Gazette. Neither the people of Union nor of any other section of tho countrv liavo any reason to clamor for n new court hoiiso. Tho one they have is a good safe commodious and convenient building, sufficient for all tho needs of the county for years to come, anil tho people of no section of the county would more earnestly oppose tho extravagance of erecting now county buildinus than the people of Union, The editors of tho Gazette arc aware of these facts and their only purpose in making these misrepresentations and in pub lishing those contemptible statements is to cover up the truth, mislead tho people and by unfair means pave tho wav for moving tho county seat to La Grando, and burdoning tho tax payers with an additional debt of at least ono hundred thousand dollars. in its issue of Feb. 8, 18S9. AVANNAMAICKIt'S MAIL HI5UV1CN. The lust issue of the Lu Grande Gazette contains a lengthy editorial under the caption of "Ono big mistake" which for cheek, gull and unblushing falsehood in without a parallel. This is the Ii ret instance in which we Uuvo over heaid of an editor apologising to his patrons for telling the truth. What is tliuiu in thuG.i.utte's write up of Union to apologizu for? It is truo that many things that is suid in that writo-up wore in eoullict with what it had been repeatedly asserting in regard to Union for mouths before. To liavo boiii consistent tho Giuutte should liavo said Unit tho whole write up to fur as Union and its people Tho Daily Union, Ogdon, Utah, gives a rather startling anil interesting in sight into the manner in which our mail service is conducted. The article is too longthly to re-pulish in those columns, but tho substance of it is that Supl. White bus been conducting tho service in a manner calcul.ikd ,o promote his own interests at tho o.v ponso of good service Ono of the charges U that mails for Oregon, Idaho and Washington have bion held over 21 hours at Clroon Kiver, and worked by clerks who should have been icsting. White is trying to make a record for economy and running the service short hundod. The result is a general kick from Omaha to Portland. Knurr ato numerous and aggravating. Mails are carried by, out-going mails not taken and letters mis-sent ; mails duo from tho oast comes un trains from the west, and vie Mma. In fact a i Afire completely Ifaphuzord and demoralized service than the west hai had for the past four months, or since tho inauguiatinu of th "fast mail," could not be poiibk'. A nd way to lodiu'otho surplus would bo to employ a suffioiout force to pcifonn service decently. W'v presume, however, that tho matter will be fully jnwstig.itoJ this Stimuli i by a r ivi.tl commit:..' in H 1 oci.d tr un at mi ) i. i i .i UlPiis.oid d"M .i il , i next wuiu-i li. a i Bulwtcrib? for Tub ouk.on sioi r. A correspondent of the .Scout mourn fully usserts that "our taxes arc high enough at present and to remove the county property, and to build new buildings at this time will necessarily incur a heavier rate of tax for seven or eight years to come, and then it will not better the county when the extra expense shall have been paid." If tho enabling act passes and the tax payers of Union county are not satis lied that tho county scut can bo re moved without inflicting additional burdens upon tho tax-payers, it will he their duty to vote the removal down. That's all there is to that prop osition. How does that sound in comparison with the utterances of the paper now? After they had got tho enabling act in tho legislature, this is the way the Gib clause read and the wav it passed tho legislature and became a law; Section 0. Should the legal voters of said county decide to change the loca tion of said county scat, and should the same be located at some other point than where the samo is now located, tho county court shall not have the power or authority to appropriate any sum of money to exceed .$5,000 for tho construction of new county build ing, and shall not have the power or authority to levy any tax upon the property of said county in excess of two and ono half (2) mills on the dollar of tho taxable property of the said Union county annually for said purposo. - Thus it will be scon that by false promises and misrepresentations they got tho enabling act passed, and noy, if by a continuation of the same tac tics, bribery and repeating at tho polls, they succeed in getting the county seat removed to La Grande, if 25.000 will bo spout for county buildings and tho foundation laid for structures that will cost many times that much in tho long run. If tho taxpayers think they will get off with any amount less than ono hundred thousand dollars they dont know tho men who aro manipula ting this scheme.
