Tho republican convention was evi

themselves elected as delegates for the
solo purposo of advancing their own
chances for oflico and who caro noth
ing for tho intorcsts of tho party or
people so long as thoy can mako their
own sefiish schemes succeed. What
can bo expected of a convention com
posed of such conflicting factions?
Wo know nothing about tho plans or
purposes of any of tho delegates that
will meet in convention next Mon

in saying that tho people of Union
liavo but ono candidate they wish to

Tho nomination for treasurer will

They know as well as tho jtople of

one half of the western wall caved in

they konvv they are asserting a false
hood known by every resident of
Union. Why do they make thoo
assertions? Has the habit of nlisre-
picsenting Union and its county seat
grown upon them to that extent that
they can't tell the truth without apolo
gizing for it?
Tho Gizette further asserts that
"there is not a particle of doubt that if
Union is successful in tho county scat
question, one of the first things that
will greet the cars of tho beloved tax
payers will be the cry for a new court
house." Where did this imaginary
i
cry for a new court house originate?!
J JSot in union, for no ono has ever
heard any responsible citizen of Union
even intimate such n thing. Tho idea
originated in tho brain of the editor of
the Gazette. Neither the people of
Union nor of any other section of tho
countrv liavo any reason to clamor
for n new court hoiiso. Tho one they
have is a good safe commodious
and convenient building, sufficient
for all tho needs of the county for
years to come, anil tho people of no
section of the county would more
earnestly oppose tho extravagance of
erecting now county buildinus than
the people of Union, The editors of
tho Gazette arc aware of these facts
and their only purpose in making
these misrepresentations and in pub
lishing those contemptible statements
is to cover up the truth, mislead tho
people and by unfair means pave tho
wav for moving tho county seat to

payers with an additional debt of at

A correspondent of the .Scout mourn
fully usserts that "our taxes arc high
enough at present and to remove the
county property, and to build new
buildings at this time will necessarily
incur a heavier rate of tax for seven or
eight years to come, and then it will
not better the county when the extra
expense shall have been paid." If
tho enabling act passes and the tax
payers of Union county are not satis
lied that tho county scut can bo re
moved without inflicting additional
burdens upon tho tax-payers, it will
he their duty to vote the removal
down. That's all there is to that prop
osition. How does that sound in comparison
with the utterances of the paper now?
After they had got tho enabling act
in tho legislature, this is the way the
Gib clause read and the wav it passed
tho legislature and became a law;
Section 0. Should the legal voters of
said county decide to change the loca
tion of said county scat, and should the
same be located at some other point
than where the samo is now located,
tho county court shall not have the
power or authority to appropriate any
sum of money to exceed .$5,000 for
tho construction of new county build
ing, and shall not have the power or
authority to levy any tax upon the
property of said county in excess of
two and ono half (2) mills on the
dollar of tho taxable property of the
said Union county annually for said
purposo. -
Thus it will be scon that by false
promises and misrepresentations they
got tho enabling act passed, and noy,
if by a continuation of the same tac
tics, bribery and repeating at tho polls,
they succeed in getting the county
seat removed to La Grande, if 25.000
will bo spout for county buildings
and tho foundation laid for structures
that will cost many times that much
in tho long run.
If tho taxpayers think they will
get off with any amount less than
ono hundred thousand dollars they
dont know tho men who aro manipula
ting this scheme.
