TALENTED TRAMPS. Tito I nriilrut Which Furnish Considerable KoikI fur Thought. A fow days ago a party of sotno fivo or six school-boys, on tholr way homo, stopped in tront of the. homo of ono of their nuniher. The conversation went from ono study to another nntll it reached tho subject of algebra; hero it stopped; one of tho boys declared hlmsolf unable to perform a difllcult problem in quadratics which had been assigned to him. His companions tried to help him, but after all hands had failed it was given up as a bad job. An oldandbesotted-Iookinglndividual who was shoveling ooai a few doors away had beon watching tho boys for some time with a look of amusement on his grimy faco. Aftoreach one had tried and failed, ho slowly laid down his shovel, picked up a piece of coal, and, walking quietly up to the boys, request ed permission to look at tho problem. After a good deal of laughing it was shown to him, and without saying a word he qi-iotly sot to work, and in a fow moments had correctly completed tho example, writing it out on the pavo ment with tho bit of coal. Tho boys looked on in wonderment, and could hardly believe their eyes, but were not slow to tako advantago of tho state of affairs, and in a fow moments tho work on tho sidowalk had beon transferred to paper. Tho coal lieavor in tho meantime had resumed his work, which was soon com pleted, and tho last seen of him ho was disappearing in tho sldodoor of a saloon. On another occasion a party of four men and ono woman wero seated in tho parlor of a hotel not far from this city. Adjoining tho parlor was a bar-room. Loaning against tho bar, leisurely drink ing, wero several countrymon. At ono of tho tables sat a tramp half asleep. His arm was curled up, forming a support for his shaggy head, which was covered with a tattered slouch hat of ancient manufacture. Suddonly, through tho half open door, thero camo tho sound of music; tho loungers stopped drinking for a moment, but almost immediately re sumed thoir occupation. Nobody noticod tho tramp. At tho llrst sound ho had raised his head trom tho table, and his oyes seemed glued to tho door through which tho music une. As it proceeded ho arose and tottered toward it, but just as ho entered the room tho musio stopped. All eyes turned on tho tramp, who was making straight for tho piano, which he reached a moment later. Lightly running his dirty lingers over tho keys, suddenly ho began to play Mendelssohn's "Wedding Jlarch." For nearly half an hour tho tramp sat thus, playing nothing but the choicest clas sical music, with a touch and execution that was itself a marvel. Tho listeners sat astonisn d and in silonce that was not broken until tho tramp, rising from tho piano, took his hat, and, going through tho bar-room to tho door, dis appeared down tho muddy road. N. Y. Sun. VENTILATION IN WINTER. Tli Iceluiiille I'lnn L'm-iI hy Some Amer ican Housekeepers. Somo house-mothers complain of a largo increase of headache as soon as tho house is shut up and tho iiros lighted for winter. Ono reason is that thoy pursue tho Icelandic plan of vontilation. A gentleman spending a night in an Icelandic house, slept in a room with a number of Icelanders. During tho night ho awoko up alnibst suirccated for a breath of air. Ho awakened his host and nsked if somo air could not be ob tained. Tho man reluctantly aroso, and going to a keyhole in tho sido of tho house, pulled out a cork and hold it in his hand a minute or two, thon with a shiver, ho put it back and pounded it down, say ing they should "all froezo to death," and returned to his pillow. A warm houso is an excellent thing in winto- So aro warm sleeping rooms, dospito tho old projudico somo still hold against thorn. There is nothing hoalth giving in children shivering half tho night in cold beds trying to get warm. Many a delicate littlo ono has gone to its gravo by such a hardening process. No doubt ono great causo for tho in creased longevity of tho race in our land, is because of tho warmer houses in win ter. My children have slept in well warmed' rooms all thoir lives, and avo never under tho doctor's care; often for a half dozen yours ai a timo never have to consult one, an uncommon tiling among village children of my acquaint ance. Depend upon it thoro is a fallacy in this theory of toughoning children, and hardening thoir constitutions by ex posure to cold. Dr. William Hall says ho "would as soon think of improving a now hat by banking it around." Tho only way to harden tho constitution is by taking good caro of it. Woll-warniod sleeping rooms in win tor are a blessing, indeed, and a stovo in an uppor hall can often secure this, hut tho rooms should also bo wollairod somo timo during tho day, and all tho blessed sunshine of tho short winter day lot in Bomowhero. Parlor and Kitchen. CurloiiH Chinese l'rochiiiiution. An oillcial at Nlngpo, China, has a cu rious proclamation to agriculturists in meter of six syllables in behalf of tho frog and tho sparrow. Of tho first it is said: "Frogs aro proflucod in tho middle of your Holds; although thoy aro littlo things, thoy are littlo human beings in form. They cherish a llfo-long attach ment to thoir natal soil, and at night thoy melodiously sing in concert with cloar voices. Moreovor, thoy protect your crops by oating locusts, thus do scrvlng tho gratitudo of tho people. Why go after dark with lanterns, schem ing to capturo tho harmless and useless things? Although thoy may bo nico fla voring for your rlco, it is heartless to slay them. Henceforward it is forbid den to buy or sell thorn, and thoso who do so will be severely punished." Spar rows "sing at their seasons sweetly in tho trees," and aro "not like wolvis, ti gers or leopards," which do harm to man. Thoir capturo is alike forbidden. In Now Zoalaud, whoro rabbits aro a groat post, thoy aro poisoned with malt, sown in furrows, as turnip seed would bo sown; thoy food at dubk and in tho oarly morning. In a fortnight 10,000 rabbits wero destroyed with only eight btisuU of poisoned malt, on Iho Gluii Ei" ! e, uoar Kynoton. 1 TIIK JltKT MIF.HKA KIIXF.Y AM I.I vr.lt l.'ltK Is a new and wonderful discovery, nianu factored from the pure fresh juices of the herbs of C.ilif irnla, in their natural state, containing all their original pr parties; delightful ti the taste and imm 'rtiute in ltseirect; positively containing no min ora' In IM composition.
