WASHINGTON. Interesting Letter I'rom Our IJorh- Iftr Corrciiiiii(lcnt. All May 17, lHb'J. r . a. ...... xiim wiimju ofui, . . In ll.o courto of few hour the president seen u queer collection of people. J ho other day I suw waiting j for an mulience iibtmt a scoro of peo-,' pie. There were Kenntor Chandler, i ncrvotii', quisical in oxnir-sMon, doned ... i i .i . -. . i m ioniore iiiiick. ..oiir linn were Edited mi old gentleman and a bevy of half a dozen pretty girls. Next to them cmno Prof. I.ingston, the eolored educator and politician, oily but vin dictive, scheming, pushing, restless. Across from him was irated Col. Tlios. Ochiltree, the red headed ranger of the Rio Grande, dressed in the noisiest of light plaid siiits",aud talking ton friend in his familiar, obtrusive, i-olf-suflieient manner. In a gioup at the farther end of the room weie a couple of old fashioned eolored country preachers, respectful and respectable, accompan ied by a broken down old colored man and woman. The faces of the four were anxious and troubled and the old woman looked pleadingly from one to another for hope. Thoy say not a word but await their turn to enter the president's presence. The four have come to ask that tho sentence of this old woman's son, who is to lie hanged this week, be commuted and, God help her, there is no hope! Public Printer Palmer is not allowed to get lonesome, or forget that lots of people are warmly interested in his welfare and are willing, nay anxious, to render hijii all reasonable assist ance in conducting the all'airs of bis office. Congressmen have been fre quent callers this week. The Grand Army delegation has called to urge tho retention and favoring of ex-soldiers in promotions, and the ollieo seekers have culled by the hundreds to urge their own cases. It is expected that employes discharged during tho demo cratic administration will be reinstated and that short work will bo made of democrats. Mr. Palmer, when in the Chicago postoflico, made a record for partizaiiship which tho ollieo seekers fondly hope he will fully sustain in his present place. About a year ago an ox-pago of the senate, Jacob L. Doty, was appointed a United States Consul in Tahaiti. Doty, who had reached tho serious and diplomatic ago of 22 years, pitched up his lawn tenuis suit and his llannel bluzors and hied himself away to tho royal court of Tahaiti, a court of whoso very oxistenco a man might bo entirely ignorant and still do business; but a court that Doty writes back to his friends is not to bo sneezed at. Many moons ago an Knglishmiui, a Lord IV Arcy, with a lino oyo for tho main chance married a native princess of the fr-'outh Sea Islands. To-day the result of tho marriugo is a beautiful dusky Tahaitian princess of 20, in her own light the largest property owner on tho island. Hlio possesses cocoa plantations, galore and pearl fisheries worth untold millions. When Consul Doly arrived at Tahaiti this maiden was fancy free. Of course, the young noblemen of tho is lands, who were sighing for her favors, wore too numerous for comfort. A good many of them wcro gieat and howling swells and how sho could re fuse them all actually shocked tho court. Hut Doty camo and conquered. Ah quick as he landed on the magio island, his loud spring suit made its impression on her susceptible young Tahaitian heart and but a fow short months and they were engaged. Tho princcth' English father has, as was natural in a cad who had married a savage princciH for her money, mtulo a great howl about tho princess marry ing below her station. When it was represented to him, however, that Con sul Doty was a groat grand-son, on his mother's side, of Lord Melbourne, who was an under Secretary of Statu during tho early portion of ljueon Victoria's reign, and is also related to tho Wal laces and McPhersou's and so on and so on, my Ixird 1)' Arcy was necessa rily disarmed. Now society in tho South Sea Is lands is humping itself to celebrate tho considerably royal nuptials in tho most approved fashion. In all this there is something that umuscd mo. A young American, who was a year ago an humble page in tho senate, rakes through his ancestry with a Hue comb lo llnd a pedigree that tits him to wed a South Sea Inland piineess, whoso mother wore a ring through her nofo and whose grandfather was an epieuio in tho matter of boiled mis sionary. Tho annual session of tho Mount Vernon Ladies association bus closed its annual services and its reports hIiow a Batisfaotory prosperity and over increasing general interest in the sacred homo of Washington, i J. The closing exercises at Ascension hall will bo held Monday ovc, June 3d, and will consist of instrumental and vocal music, essays, etc. A cordial invitation is extended to all to bo pres ent. Mrs. T. T. Geer and son returned home to Macleay this week. She was accompanied by Mrs 1L J. Geer and son, also Miss Laura Murphy, who will remain in tho Willamette until after tho fourth. Tho kids of the village gave quite a creditable variety show, a la lioulon, at Foster's hull last Saturday after noon. Among tho novelties was a brass band, tho music being an agrcc ablo surprise to every ono present. Enterprising Fourth of July commit tees will try to secure this band as ono of tho attractions. A band consisting of eight or ten children under twelve j years of ago, rendering an easy grade of music in good stylo, would be a fea ture of tho day anywhere. Tho church fair at Foster's hall, Friday night, was very well attended, net receipts being about fiU.'Jo. In tho drawing for tho silk quilt, one hundred chances at fifty cents each, Mis. II. L. Lewis, of Union, was the lucky winner. IJoothea of fancy articles were presided over by Miss Morriton and Miss Payne. Tho fair salesladies disposed of their slocks almost to an article. In a vote for tho handsomest young lady present, Miss Annie Smith was chosen. Tho ballot box was not stuil'ed, though it is said ono young man present nuvdo the attempt. Tho proceeds will be devoted to building a new fence around Ascension church. Tho match game of ball in Union botween La Grande and tho Cove-Union nines proved to bo a very much ono sided contest, yet did not lack points of interest. Tho La Grandors woro probably as line an appearing club as over were seen in the valley, being, without exception, musculni, active young fellows in the pink of condition. Judging from tho prelimi nary practice, the side with tho beauty was to havo it all their own way, and it might so havo resulted had they played in good luck. Hut inexcusa ble errors were the rule and Matott was pounded all over tho field. Even their imported first baseman did not do as well as wns expected of him. On tho contrary the local club put up as good a game as they are capable of. Smith proved a pu..lo as usual, and struck out near twenty. Slocum sup ported Smith in great stylo, and was tho recipient of many compliments, not to inontion a bouquot of sun (low ers from his best girl. Tho feature- of tho game was a splendid lly catch by Ransom in extreme left field, llo at oneo lined tho ball down to second, cutting oil a base runner, thus making us neat a double play as is scon any where Hansom had two long Hies and by accopting both after sharp runs, made it plain that he is familiar with tho game. Ifo is also very handy with tho stick. MEDICAL SPRINGS. Spicy and l'liiinut I.otttn- Kriiiu uu Ocrnalonnl I'lirruniiumluiit, May 2(5 1889. Beautiful silvery rain drops. Wo did not know which was the . worst scared, Pat or the deer.(?) i Miss Grace Wright is extensively j engaged in tho chicken and turkey business. Miss Daisy Jameson has gone to ! linker City to remain several weeks. , The metropolis of Raker county offers i many attractions to youth and beauty, j but Union is going to do the grand on the Fourth of July. Mrs. Lizzie IJaird has returned home from Raker to remain with her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Turner. She made a pleasant visit to tho Springs during thu week. Mr. A. V. Oliver, of Sanger, accom panied by Mies Curtis, made this place a pleasant visit, Sunday. Uncle "Crook" Panics was disturbed at a very early hour a few nights ago by his powerful mastiff, Snyder, and after arming himself with guns and other weapon of defense, sallied forth to kill the "varmint" when to his great surprise ho found tho wife of a neighboring Dutchman treed in the wagon sued nearly trozen to death.
