I f X STUDIES IN HYSTERIA. A. rrofcHtir Who Jlnkn tlio Norvc of IVoplii Hl riuytliliiR. l'rof. Charcot, tho renowned speeial .ist of diseases of the nervous system, performed some striking experiments on hysterical subjects in the course of a lecturo dolivered at the Salpetriere Asylum. The lethargic girl is one of l'rof. Charcot's pet subjects. Sho re mains constantly in the hospital, and on special occasions the servant demonstrates tho wonderful power ho has over her. So sensitive is her tem perament that he can at his will throw her into tho profound lethargy in which she lay on this occasion. He first stated that this young wom an was in a stage of hysteria radical ly different from that of her companion. She was like an inert mass; her mus cles were all relaxed and it was impos sible for anv member of her body to retain a fixed position without support. There was also a marked difference in the condition of tho nervous system of tho two women. The one was keen ly sensitive, the other apparently dead. In each caso the professor pressed a pencil upon the faciei nerve which lies directly in front of tho ear. This had not tho slightest effect upon tho woman in tho hysterical sleep, whereas tho face of tho voting girl instantly lighted up in a smile. Curiously enough, she only smiled on tho side wherotlie pres sure was applied. It was tho same with other nerves. Tho lethargic girl would raise her hand when the operator pressed upon tho radical norvo above tho olbow joint When the mesial nerve, near tho former, was touched her arm would spring up in a pugi listic attitude, with tho list tightly clenched, and on applying tho pencil to what is vulgariy known as tho "funny bono" she would lift her arm as if pronouncing a benediction, tho lirst and second lingers of tho hand being raised heavenward. Nothing of this sort had any effect upon the other subject. An experiment with the gong, which had been vainly beaton above the lirst patient, produced a startling effect in this caso. Tho Chef do Clinique had struck hut a single blow on the sound ing brass when tho young girl started up as by an electric shock, She sat straight up, with her eyes wide open, and but for their fixed, stony gaze ono might have fancied her awake She had passed in an instant from tho stato of lethargy into that of cata lepsy. She neither moved nor spoko. l'rof. Charcot proceeded to show that pressure upon tho nerves no long er produced muscular contraction. We were in the presenco of a now sot of phenomena. Tho professor lifted the girl's right hand to her lips, as if she were throwing a kiss. Instantly the unconscious association of ideas caused tho right sido of tho face to smile. It was tho same when tho loft hand was raised, and when both hands touched her lips tho entire face radiated the mind's happy thought. Tho young gentlemon present enjoyed this greatly. A frown was produced with equal facility. Clenching ono of tho lists caused a scowl to pass over tho cor responding sido of tho faco, and the professor succeeded by combining tho two processes in making her smile on one sido and frown on tho other. No ono who saw this extraordinary con tortion could for a moment question tho genuineness of tho donionsi ration Still more extraordinary was tho fa cility with which L'rof. Charcot made his patient pass back from' catalepsy to lethargy. This ho accomplished by simply closing the lids and pressing gently on ono or both of her eyes. Hy touching the right eye ho changed tho girl's right side into tho lethargic con cition while leaving tho loft sido under tho influence of catalepsy. He demonstrated to tho satisfaction of all that such was really tho caso. The right eye was closed, whilo the left remained staring open. Tho norves on tho right side responded to press ure, whilo those on tho loft remained dead. Ono sido of tho body was rigid whilo tho other was inert. Through all this tho patient never uttered a sound. Having sufficiently ostab.ished tho existence of tlih dual state the professor pressed simultaneously upon both of tho girl's eyes, when sho fell back on tho pillow like a lump of lead. Tho final experiment consisted in waking tho lethargic girl. This was easily dono by breathing sharply in hor faco. Mio started up, glanced about hor in a duzed way, and then, realizing that .-lio was only half drosfeod before a crowd of jovial med ical students, sho seized hor scattered garments and disappeared from the scone with astonishing rapidity. President-elect Harrison, in roply to a correspondent in New-Castlo-Un-der-Lyme, England, wrote recently that "it lias been accopted by soino of my relatives who have given study to tho subject, that our family has de scended, from General Thomas Harri son, an ollicer in Cromwell's army." Ho added that ho had never troubled himself to make a personal examina tion of the evi'ience. The Chief of Polico of Anniston, Ga., made a queer arrest tho other day. It was that of a yellow negro man, about six feet tall, masquerading as a woman. Ho had on a blue worsted dress, blade hat with blue plunio, thin white veil over his face, golden hair and bangs that any ono would envy.
